HD DVD Group resonds to Netflix / Best Buy Statements
The HD DVD Promotions Group has issued a statement following a pair of news stories Monday that saw two leading brands in the home entertainment industry endorsing Blu-ray.
The statement (which was first published by CNET late Monday) calls Netflix's decision to exclusively back Blu-ray "unfortunate," while emphasizing that although Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray, the retailer will continue to stock HD DVD.
The complete text of the HD DVD Group's statement follows below:
"We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward. While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."
lmfao. "at least".

^ Werd. I caught onto that little snippet too.
Spin in anyway that want, it's still bad news for HD-DVD and good news for Sony/B-R and their allies.

The end is near.
Honestly, do you guys think HD-DVD players will even be on the market this coming holiday season?

I'm not to sure if upconversion players will be that much around xmas next year...
But you bring up a good point: even as an upconversion player they would be a steal at that price.

Still, I dont' think it will be successful, even at that price point. Sure, they will sell, eventually, but not quickly.
Most consumers looking to invest in any HD format have already spent quite a large sum of money on their HDTV's, and they are probably asking questions / doing research. Most of the folks I know at Best Buy always recommend Blu-Ray as the definitive format of choice. When consumers see Blu-Ray players on set pieces, and no HD DVD players, or 3 to 4 racks of Blu-Ray movies, as opposed to the 2 that are on display for HD DVD...
Personally, I think investing in any HD DVD players / movies is a waste of money and time.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I completely agree.
I'm just saying at sub $100, an HD DVD player would be great as an upconversion player.
Personally, I recommend Blu-ray players to all customers that talk to me(which isn't a whole lot because I work in computers).

i dont think hd-dvd is a waste of money, if your in the market for upconversion for your dvd collection already anyway. might as well get one that plays hd-dvd and get free movies and one of the best upconversion players on the market.
you got to remember that hd is still like 1% of the entire dvd market; there is still along way to go. most ordinary people are just satisfied with their $70 upconversion player and ordinary joe make up 95%+ of the market....

I might actually go that route... buying an HD DVD player for upconversion that is. Probably not until the players reach a sub $100 level though...

If you own a PS3, you're wasting your money buying an HD DVD player for upscaling. Do you not own a PS3?
Because the PS3 is almost on par with Toshiba's BEST HD DVD player, the A3, when it comes to upscaling, plus you already have the added benefit of Blu-Ray support.

divinewisdom - HD DVD is still a waste of money. The average 'joe' that you talk about? Yea, he can't tell the difference between a standard DVD player that upscales to 1080i and the A3 (which only upscales to 1080i).
He can, however, tell the difference between HD content and DVD, and I'm sure that Best Buy, Block Buster, Netflix, and now Walmart will help make it clear that HD DVD isn't the route to go. It's a waste of money.

'Did you not read what I said?'
I want a stand-alone, upconversion DVD player.
My PS3 does not fit into that category, does it? No, it most certainly does not. I'll be keeping my eye on the A3 over the next year, thank you very much.

God I hate the joe six pack phrase 'upconversion'.
It's upscaling. Suit yourself, Toshiba killed HD DVD last night. Waste your money joe six pack.
