I might buy an HD DVD player, here is why.
At work we sell a Toshiba D3/A3 HD DVD player for $80 and it comes with an HDMI cable along with 2 other HD DVD movies: 300 and Borun Identity. Along with that, you also get 5 other HD DVD movies for free. I will admit, the 5 other free HD DVD isn't the best movies in the world, but hey its free!
I know the HD DVD format is dead, oh well. But here is my logics.
Since I need a dvd player, I will us this one as my dvd player. I can think of this as a "high end" dvd player with the ability to upcovert to 720p/1080i. Most upconvertion dvd player sell for about this price or even more.
This player used to sell for $250 when it first came out. The price started to drop from $250-200-180-150-120 and now at $80. Since HD DVD format is dead, I am sure other place will sell there HD DVD movies for dirt cheap as well to clear them out. I should expect to see them for about $10 each.
I am in no rush to buy a Blu-Ray player until the price drop to about $100. I love watching movies, but I just don't have the time to watch movies like I used to. So spending $350 for a Blu-Ray dvd player at the time would be a waste of money if I use it once a month or so if I an lucky to find the time.
Also I hardly buy DVD. Since the DVD player came out, I bought like 10 dvd movies total. 9/10 of the DVD that I bought, I bought it at a close out price. The only DVD that I bought when it first came out was Shrek because my gf wanted to watch it. So if I don't get to watch the latest movies it won't kill me.
I know my theory does not holds true for everyone, but if you think about it, $80 for a HD DVD player with 7 movies its a good deal if you need a "standard" DVD player.

last upconverting dvd player i bought was like 45 bucks after tax on sale @ best buy.
just seems foolish to start up with a small collection of dead format discs.. like if i saw a laserdisc player @ a garage sale for 80 bucks with 20 movies, i'd pass on it. of course it's your money so you'll do what you want.

No, not starting up a collection, just buying a really good "regular" dvd player for $80 and getting 7 HD dvd for free. Really its 300 that I want to watch in HD, and I get that for free. So instead of buying a cheap $50 dvd player that can't even play HD, why not get one that does play HD and get a movie that I want for free?
I don't plan to buy any HD movies unless if I find a movie that I really like for cheap. I doubt I will have a large collections of HD dvd movies. Like I said, since DVD came out, I have only 10 dvd movies that I bought.

Actually, I see where he's coming from.
Obviously he's not a big movie person, at least not on physical media. What advantage does he have to buying a more expensive blu-ray player? New movies will continue to be released on dvd for quite a while, it's not dead yet.
I'd say whatever movies you do decide to get, go ahead and get the hd dvd if it's available, theres always some cheap ones on ebay now.
Personally, I'm going to switch when my current dvd players break. Until then, I don't feel the need to purchase a blu-ray player...unless it's a ps3.

That's not a bad deal for a good upconvert dvd player, as you put it. I'm not a movie person either but, I'm, technically, and early Blu-Ray adopter for my PS3. I haven't purchased any BDs but, I did watch 300 in HD (stunning to say the least) and I also got 5 freebies. IMO, if you're not considering a PS3 at any point in the near future, your scenario is a nice bargain. Essentially 10$ per item.
Also, about starting a collection of dead format discs... It seems kinda fun to me because, in a couple of decades, he'll have a nice conversation piece in his home. "HD DVD... what's that?" :-p

yea but not all up-convert player are equal.
i would say that if your in the market for an upconversion player right now; your best bet is to buy a HD-DVD player.

Actually a lot of people are doing that.
They're getting the hd dvd players and the movies that are on hd dvd cause it's dirt cheap now. Who cares if it's a dying format, they just want to watch the movies on 720p and up, and for cheap. Since hdvds are even cheaper then regular dvds, why not get a hdvd player for $50-$80 and just get the hd dvds for $10 or less.
I think imma do that also.

My main reason for not doing it is because I don't like hardware clutter. I've already got a DVD player in the room, and the PS3 / 360 in the living room for DVD's and High Def media, buying another player simply seems crazy to me. I mean, in years, are you really going to want to keep that HD DVD player hooked up to your TV to watch the small selection of HD DVD movies? You'll probably have a Blu-Ray player by then, it just seems crazy to invest in the hardware if you already haven't.
I'm sure there will be Blu-Ray players in the future, though, that will support / play HD DVD's. It'll take time for those to come down, and they'll likely cost at least 25% more than standard Blu-Ray players.

I agree with the OP.
I will be purchasing an HD-DVD player simply to act as a really nice upconversion DVD player. I will not be purchasing any HD-DVDs, that would be a waste of money.
But for $80, I'd like to see someone find a better deal for a really nice upconversion player with seven movies.
