So, my original thoughts of the blackberry are much different from my new ones, so I'm going to make a review to give the phone a fair chance, it's a great phone.
Pros:
Big screen (high resolution, very bright)
Scroll Ball for nice navigation ease
Nice keyboard layout, doesn't take too long to get used to
Nice predictive text system, easy to adjust to
1.3 mp camera, very nice for a phone
Nice internet surfing with Opera mini (especially 4.0, it's currently beta right now but you can check it out here, it's just like iphone surfing
http://www.operamini.com/beta/simulator/ )
Unlike the Iphone, you can actually scroll back through typed text and copy/paste/edit stuff, and it's easy with the scroll wheel
comes with a very nice media player, plays lots of formats of music and video
has a nice folder/directory system (and you can even view contents of the microsd card in folders higher up than the preset music/video/ringtones/pictures folders, it rocks)
you can use FULL mp3's as a ringtone
amazing battery life, i can watch about 4 movies in a row before the battery gives out, and that's with a few calls/texts between
no limit on text message inbox/outbox, i haven't deleted a single text since i got the phone 3 months ago, AND the layout of how texting works is truely badass... it shows in and out texts in one page like an instant message window... it puts it all together for you, you just have to see it to know what i'm talking about but it's really nice
when watching a movie or listening to a song, if you get a call, it automatically pauses it and when you end the call you can hit play and resume where you left off
you can program the two "convenience buttons" on either side of the blackberry to open whatever application you wish, i have my right button open the camera, and the left one open my media player
the ear bud headset that it comes with has really really good sound quality, listening to mp3's is just like using an ipod, and i even got an armstrap for when i run, and it has a mic/answer/mute button so i can just click the button if i get a call and answer it, very nice, haven't tried bluetooth yet but my buddy has and it's flawless
has a MicroSD memory slot, i got me a 2gb card in there, LOTS of songs/movies for a phone
with some VERY simple video compressing, you can fit full movies onto the blackberry, full quality video and sound, they're roughly 210mb, so on a 2gb card you could fit about 9 full length movies (assuming you don't have any songs taking up any space), i usually leave about 2 movies and a few hundred songs (i still have a ton of space left too)
it's small, and sleek, very sexy phone
it's way cheaper than the iphone
unlike the iphone which has a hard to type with touch screen, this keypad is easy to type on even as small as the buttons are
there's a light sensor on the front face which adjusts the screen brightness, even in direct sunlight i can read the screen just fine, i love it
uses a standard usb cable, just plug one end in to the phone, other end into the computer, and without using ANY software, you can just open the "Removable Storage" drive (your blackberry's SD card) from mycomputer and just drag and drop shit on and off the phone without bothering with syncing it with the blackberry desktop software
it has speakerphone, that's always a plus, and a keyboard shortcut to turn it on or off for ease while driving
phone is fav-5 compatible, and lets you take pics and crop them to use as the fav-5 icon, pretty neat, and for regular people you can take and use pics as a photo caller id too
there are several desktop formats you can use on the phone, i choose the 5 icons at the bottom of the screen, you can choose what apps to put there, and you can even hide apps in the full list (like setup and help ones that you'll never use again), pretty handy
phone lets you minimize stuff and use other applications, for example, i can play an mp3 and then minimize the mp3 player and go play a game like brickbreaker and the mp3 continues to play in the background, it's badass
you can copy/paste stuff between applications, like i can copy a number from Opera web browser, then paste it into my phonebook
there are many more things I could list, but that should do it for now
you can usb charge the phone, how nice is that for traveling, just plug it into your laptop and you're good to go
Cons: (though there are few, I'll be honest and list everything I can think of)
The MicroSD slot is under the battery, so it's not practical to switch it out, you basically pop it in and leave it, but really 2gb is plenty of space and you can drag/drop media to and from the blackberry with your computer and usb cable anyways
it's hard to change the text message sound, but it can be done, took me a while to figure out how lol
the web browsers don't support flash, so you can't youtube it up like you can on an iphone or windows CE handheld, but you CAN watch full movies so who cares
this is one of the very few phones that has a camera but doesn't record video, the quality would suck anyways so i don't care too much but it still woulda been cool if i could record short clips with the digital camera, oh well
the speaker is a bit weak, i mean it gets kinda loud, but nothing like the ones on Sanyo phones, if they'd upgrade the speaker i'd be so happy, it's the phone's weakest link
so, though it took me a month or two to figure everything out on the phone, I love it now that i know how to use it, and really, had i not been a lazy fuck and just read the instructions, i woulda known how to use it the first week lol oh well just my review on the phone, it's worth the money, makes the iphone even harder to buy when this phone can do most of the shit that it can for a fraction of the price
