tv: Samsung LNS3241D with 2 HDMI, 1 Component, 1 Optical Out
reciever: Sony dvd dream system, supports DTS and DD 5.1, 1 Optical In
games: PS3 and Xbox 360
I have my xbox to tv via component, PS3 to tv via HDMI. Theoretically I should have digital audio from OTA broadcast and the PS3 being sent to the reciever through my optical cable, but still allow analog audio from the xbox go to the reciever. All of that kinda works, digital audio from OTA broadcast go to my reciever, xbox analog goes to the reciever.
The PS3 only outputs Linear PCM 2.1, no DD or DTS 5.1
After reading the PS3's HDMI handshaking compatibility it had lots of problems with older TV's accepting a signal at all, both audio and video. With recent firmware updates that problem should have been fixed, I get video absolutely fine, but digital 5.1 audio is a no show. I tried going into the settings of the PS3 and doing it manually, but to no avail.
Anyone else have this similar problem that can help me out?
edit: the only way I can get DD and DTS 5.1 is if I hook up the optical cable to the PS3 directly, not via HDIM to TV to reciever.

Fixed for truth.
I'll give it a look man, i'll start doing some research and see what's going on.
But let me get this straight. You've got your PS3 out putting your audio over HDMI, and it's only passing 2.1 LPCM?
i actually had the exact same problem. hdmi is hit and miss really. video was fine through hdmi for me, but never any audio. finally gave up and used component.
you really don't have any options here. sorry bro. either hook the optical up directly. or use component
See thats the issue with HDMI 1.2 It sucks! I install Home Theaters for a living and we try to say away from HDMI as much as possible if your using low end components. I'm not saying that your component are low end, but I use $1000 dollar receivers, and they still have issues with HDCP. So I'm not sure what OTA broadcast is but hook up the HDMI to the T.V and the optical to the receiver. You are not gaining anything by going through the tv then the out the tv to the receiver. Don't over think it, thats when you get into trouble.
i agree w/ tjones...just go hdmi for video and run a separate optical for audio. i probably would only use hdmi for audio if i had a 7.1 system anyways.

forget PCM 5.1, you can't get it by other than going HDMI to a receiver that can handle it (Denon or Pioneer Elite).
You have to do a few things first, and this is something everyone should know.
1. Enable "Bitstream" on output on DVD/BD setup, or else it's pointless.
2. Enable AAC, DTS, and Dolby Digital in your optical audio settings.
3. Save up around 3k for a decent HDMI based reciever, right now all the HDMI based recievers can't handle LinearPCM sound.
