*NOTE: if you decide to try this for yourself, you do so at your own risk.. if you fuck up your shit, don't come crying to me. i came up with this idea on my own, and tested everything numerous times before doing it. and since i came up with this on my own, i owe credit to no one, so don't bitch about me stealing your idea and/or credit.. that crap aside, read on.*
so yeah, i got this great idea on a new dash config.. only problem was, i needed more room than i had. what could i lose? heater controls.. hell, i never use them much anyway (before i figured out how to fix my heat).. so they went bye bye. radio moved up to that spot.. freeing room for 7" headrest, hehe
then one day i figure out how to get heater hot again.. doh! now i have no controls. can't put them back in same spot, cuz custom lower dash is already in progress. so i get an idea.. inspired by a cockpit theme, let's put them in the ceiling! only problem is, cable won't reach up there and the housing is too damn big to fit where i want it. so out comes the screwdriver and disassembly begins. while ripping the thing apart (i must've had the only control out there in perfect condition.. oops) i decide that i want to trim the thing down a bit. cut out the crap i don't really need.
for starters, i don't need the temp control.. the only time i use it is when it's cold, so i set heater on permanent heat and tossed the cable. next, i don't need a little light to tell me what mode i'm in.. if you can't tell where the air is coming from, then you have no business operating a car in the first place. i do some testing and discover that the motor that selects the vents only needs a momentary signal to switch positions. hmm, five momentary pushbuttons should cover me fine. alarm valet switches!!
in the middle of the project, here's what i have...
i added the final button tonight. here's an idea of what it looks like behind the plate...
and this is the switch i used, it's the valet switch from a dei alarm. being an installer has it's perks.. =P
it's actually a lot easier than it may seem. you only need 6 wires for the vent position switch. one common wire, and 1 for each position. i used three lengths of speaker wire for mine.. just make sure you label them at each end before you run it, to avoid confusion when it comes time to hook it up. if using pushbuttons like i did, take one side of each switch and connect to the common wire. connect the other leg of switch to corresponding wire for fan position.
in order to figure out which pin is what in the plug, i used this page from a crx manual...

the next step is to get a switch for fan speed.. this one's different, fan speed requires constant signal.. little pushbuttons won't do here. i figure i'm gonna use a three-way rocker switch.. i only need two speeds, mid and high. once i get that in, i suppose i'll update this thread with a brief description.
sorry if this is not 100% walk-thru, but i figure if i give you the concept, it shouldn't be too tough to figure out.
