DIY: Real Carbon Fiber Overlay
Theres really nothing to it. Just time.
Peice being used- 2001 Prelude center arm rest
Toolz needed:
1- Carbon fiber cloth (Ebay- $30 an up)
2- Fiber glass resin ($21 an up -Autozone)
3- Super glue( $1- Dollar store)
4- Cutting shears
5- some sort of scrapper (puddy knife)
6- some sort of cardboard to work on
7- Plastic dish
8- Krylon UV protected spray ($8+ shipping -Online)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
First Get you Carbon fiber Cloth
The cut about 2in bigger the then the peice peice you working with
Then Get your super glue and spread it over the top of the peice an lay the carbon fiber over the top. Make sure its flat an smooth when you do this. Also make sure you super glue the edge an any curves so it looks clean at the end.
Now that it is wrapped an pretty much stuck on there, get your resin
Mix it the way it says in to a plastic dish. The dump a small amount in the middle of the object. Spread it evenly an slow motion(dont want bubbles) into the carbon. about 1hr before the resin cures an put another coat. If you do only one coat, you can still feel the carbon threw the resin.
Now after you let it sit an cured for the for how ever long it says. sand it smooth. Dont sand it to the carbon fiber. If you a little wary about doing this, spray some clear to fill in the small bumps.,then sand, Repeat this process until it smooth.
Last step is to use some Krylon UV spray, only if dont use UV protect resin. Put a few coats of this spray an wet sand it in between so the resin wont yellow.
Thats pretty Much about it. I dont know if thats the "right way", but it works for me

Looks great, I'm curious as to how it stands up to the test of time though, whether it be the sun (I know you used UV protectant) or usual wear and tear. The arm rest is a piece that is exposed to the sun quite a bit, also, your arm you know, rests on it. All that friction from moving your arm, as well as sweat and such.
Hopefully it looks that great this time next year.

How smooth is that it looks like it could use some more resin or clear. Either way looks good. Just one layer of CF?

hi,
I'm quiet impress by the simplicity of the process, I worked in a surfshop for a while now & the work is quiet the same..
didn't thought of that for interior part, interior of teg in my country are a bit different of the us versions, how is the armrest made.. rigid platic or softer more leatherlike finish ?
suppose that u didn't put it under heat lamp for dryin...
thought that carbon fiber layerin was more complicated, realy would like to get a close look to the finish
any closer pic ?
