VSS removal/install DIY

VSS Removal/install

for those of you with a speedo that is non functioning, or very problematic the vss is usually a good fix.

for those of you that dont know what a VSS is, it stands for

Vehicle Speed Sensor

and this well, monitors your speed and gives an electrical signal to your dash.

the VSS is usually located right over the differential on a honda transmission as seen here: on a S20 trans

its on the back of the transmission right above the shift levers on a D series transmission.

to remove the VSS from the transmission remove the bolt shown.

And when that is loosened just wiggle it out

and here is an electronic VSS from a S20 D series transmission

Install is reverse of removal

VSS Function Explained

the way a VSS works is that little yellow gear turns a little shaft that gives off an electrical signal that is sent to the speedo (shown here)

and that little yellow gear rides on a helical gear in the differential (shown here)

very simple fix to a odd problem

the vss is located on the topside of the transmission. it should be pretty easy to find as there are not many sensors plugged into the transmission.
