Coil On Plug Ignition on civic
hey everybody.
does anyone have any type of information. maybe a write up or just a lead in the right direction as of to where i can find how to run a distributorless ignition system for a honda engine.
honda's have very good stock ignition setups. why are you looking to to with a COP setup? don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking on coil on plug setups I have one on my galant I'm just trying to find out what your goals are.

hotter stronger consistent spark at higher rpm.
i also wanted to actually just do it because it looks unique.
and im totally capable of doing it . i just need to be pointed in the right direction.
Yeah, I have seen alot of race cars in Canada that use seperate coils for ignition, I've even seen some B series civics that run modified distributors with 4 seperate coils, like 4 MSD blaster coils but they aren't any faster than one with one external coil and a modified distributor cap, thats pretty much your best bet. But..if you do want to run individual coil packs, you'll have to look into some of the lesser known standalone engine management systems...re-wiring your entire engine harness and then tuning it.
The stock ignition works very well. Unless you have a highly custom setup, I wouldn't waste time w/cop unless you are just trying to reduce parasitic loss from the distributor, but even then there are better places to put your effort.
so cop is good, but converting a non cop car to cop isn't the best use of your time/money.

unless you can do it for very very very cheap. lol
there are people that sell COP for dsm's on ebay that go for over $350. I would never buy anything like that. but since I'm a dsmer and I'm cheap I had to find a cheaper way. after all said and done this is what I ended up after spending $175

you need stand alone engine management system, because the stock honda ecu has only 1 ignition output distrubuted across 4 cyl of course. then you are gonna want a cam trigger, t1racedevelopment makes one. then you have a couple options you can go with a cdi system i'd recommend the m&w pro-14 box, this is a 4 channel system or the pro-12 this is a 2 channel and must be used with wasted spark. this must be accompanied 4 coils of course(2 if wasted spark), ive used the honda cbr 929 coil sticks on my setup they work well.
you can go with an inductive setup this is a non-cdi system and just use the outputs to fire the coils. not sure what coils are best for that i havent done a setup like that.
the stock ignition system is good for a LOT of power, for most practical purposes the coil on plug upgrade is not worth it.
The issue with the civics though is the electronics inside the distributor make it very difficult to do cop. But if it were doable for $175, then I would definately say go for it simply to eliminate the distributor.

IF it was only that much.
i found a thread on it on another site lurking around. and it will get to be more than 175
i was just wondering what it would take to do a conversion like that.
plus i saw some pics of people actually eliminating the dizzy completely and i gotta say it looks very nice when its done well
thanks for everyones input.
you guys/girls are the best.
