This is not a replacement for scanning programs such as anti virus/spyware/malware/adaware
Ive used this setup in addition to my security programs and havent had a problem since
First big step is PeerBlock
PeerBlock ? Peerblock Site
Always go for the stable release
I recommend a defrag and ccleaner run before install. as with any other program installation, return your system to stock clocks or 24/7 stable overclocks.
Peerblock comes with several lists that already work quite well.
P2P, Spyware, Advertising, and Education are their default lists
however, these lists are not updated in realtime, and some have fallen from the usefull ranks, due to assholes and spammer **** getting sm,arter, anti-piracy groups using more and more connections and tricks ot bypass blocking programs
iblocklist.com
Here is the extra lists I use. so far, I have NOT edited any of them. they are all block lists
LIST...............ADDRESS

*= Dont Route Or Peer,
**=these are IPs that have been compromised. Once trusted, but now being used by spammers, hackers, or anti-piracy
***=Large field of IPs. if you get connections blocked that you need, I would edit this list before simply removing it
If you guys need more information or help setting this up, PM me or respond here
I posted this thread in hopes that this can someday attain general knowledge. damn anti-piracy, spammers, advertising, all that stuff can be hit hard or removed from ever being seen on the computer. not only is this a security thing, but it can be advantageous as well, for example, removing the need for plugins on programs. an example is the adblock-plus plugin for firefox. depending on the operating system, FF with that plugin is a memory hog.
I will try to edit this as necessary, and if anyone wants to add to this, you are more then welcome
I take no credit for the creation of these programs or the hard work behind the creation of the proper lists. All the lists I provided are easy to add in peer block by simply clicking the list manager on the left side of the peerblock window when you have it up.
These lists have been tested and editted for general public use and work great
