i'm posting this question for a buddy and couldn't find an answer doing a search so don't kill the messenger.

currently the problem is the car will not go into 1st gear. His mechanic is telling him that he needs a new transmission.

HAP recycling has ONE VTEC tranny in stock @ 1250.00

HAP recycling has FIVE SI trannies in stock @ 450.00

He just bought the car and doesn't have money for the VTEC tranny.

Anyone have a Prelude VTEC running an SI tranny?

Problems running this? Taller or lower gearing?

he is well aware that the used tranmissions may also have problems. not sure how HAP works with guarantees or warranties.

He needs to make the decision today.

Ideas/Help!/Feedback is greatly appreciated as this is his daily driver and he doesn't not have a spare car.

Does he plan to install the transmission himself? If so, I'd just recommend ripping that one apart and replacing what is worn/broken. For those prices you could rebuild most of your transmission.

I think that the Si has longer gears then the VTEC one (Or maybe shoter dunno haha) but since the gearing isn't made for that engine it doesn't run to it's full potional so it's a little slower then the normal one, not sure how much slower it is though.
