Power of conversation: Volkswagen ‘R’ series may come to America

AutoWeek has learned the Euro-market Volkswagen R32 is in the final stages of testing to see if the car can be modified to meet U.S. crash standards. Those tests should be completed in the next few weeks and if the engineers are successful, we will see the R32 Golf coming to the United States as a 2004 model.

The idea to consider the R32 for the U.S. market may have come from a conversation Volkswagen Chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder had with automotive journalists during a lunch in June at the company’s test facility near Wolfsburg. In response to a journalist asking why the hot new R32 Golf wouldn’t be coming to the States, the chairman hastily arranged for an unplanned test drive of the car at the track. The journalists came away impressed with the car’s acceleration, braking and handling, not to mention the Golf-on-steroids look. Apparently, the chairman was impressed by their response.

But wait, there’s more: VW also is looking at developing an entire R line of performance models, from R Jettas to Passats to Phaetons and even Touaregs. VW’s sister company Audi has similar plans for its quattro performance models.

is it me or every car makers nowaday has an "R" car?
and you think they are copying off the honda.

wrong. alot of automakers have had R (race) models for a long time. and the hi-po volswagens are awesome cars. They make the S4 look like a 2.0 jetta. Most with well over 300 hp biturbo and awd. very potent cars that canextract alot of power with simple tunign and airflow mods.

Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder confirmed to AutoWeek the performance-oriented R32 Golf is indeed coming to the U.S. market. We last reported a decision on whether to sell the car stateside was dependent on whether it could meet U.S. crash standards.
Apparently, the car passed the tests because now Pischetsrieder is saying the R32 will arrive within the next year as a 2004 model.

The R32’s launch date depends upon how quickly the car can be adapted to meet U.S. certification standards, he says

Expect 5000 to 10,000 R32s priced somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000 to be earmarked for the United States, although Pischetsrieder left the door open for more if demand exists. Technical changes from the 237-hp European R32 will be limited only to those required under U.S. standards.

My boy has a 337 gti and he dreams about the R32. The car costs 32 grand in Europe, so with shipping here, and the limited supply and the economic cost of all the inspections and waht not, i would say it could easily be 38 grand. I'd rather get 2 civic si's

No standard Golf has ever had such a powerful engine as the new R32. Its 3.2-litre V6 engine is the same one as is used in the new Phaeton luxury saloon. The power output of the R32's transverse six-cylinder engine is 177 kW (at 6250 rpm) and it can take Europe's best-selling car from 0 to 100 kph in just 6.6 seconds. The new Volkswagen can cover a kilometre in 26.7 seconds from a standing start, and its top speed is 247 kph. The throttle control is designed in such a way that it responds in an extraordinarily instant and agile way to the slightest movement of the accelerator pedal.

Its very respectable maximum torque of 320 Nm (between 2800 and 3200 rpm) is distributed via a six-speed gearbox with reduced gear gates. In order for the R32 to make the most of this power on the roads, Volkswagen has equipped it with 4MOTION four wheel drive as standard. Like all Golf petrol engines, the six-cylinder model in the R32 also meets the EU 4 standard. Its average consumption is 11.5 litres of Premium petrol with a minimum octane level of 95 RON over 100 kilometres.

press release from VW:

Volkswagen R32

The most powerful Golf ever is coming to America: Its name: R32. Its output: 177 kW / 241 hp: Its engine: An extremely agile 3.2 liter V6 - which is also installed in the new Phaeton. This compact four-wheel drive sports car from Volkswagen accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds and allows a top speed of 247 km/h (153 mph) wherever this is permitted. However, this value only reveals one of the Golf R32's dynamic sides. The manner in which this sports car exhibits a high level of agility, superiority and safety in all speed ranges and in all conceivable situations is equally as fascinating.

V6 with an output of 177 kW / 241 hp: In technical terms, the compact six-cylinder engine is characterized, amongst other aspects, by the continuously adjustable inlet and exhaust camshaft, cylinder-selective knock control and variable intake manifold geometry. The engine's power (a maximum of 320 Newtonmeters) is transferred to the standard 4MOTION four-wheel drive via a six-speed gearbox with tightly graduated shifting travel. A twin-branch exhaust system with two chrome-plated tailpipes ensures that the R32 emits an appropriately throaty roar.

Exterior: The optical appearance of this new, top Golf model is characterized by its sports running gear which - in comparison with the standard model - has been lowered by 20 millimeters, 18" alloy wheels with 225/40 ZR 18 tires and extensive modifications at the front and rear.

Interior: In the passenger compartment, brushed aluminum trim (pedals, center console, gearshift lever, etc.) underlines the dynamic orientation of the most successful car ever built in Germany. The newly-designed front sports seats with integrated headrests and a leather-covered steering wheel exclusive to the R32 have been designed for sporty driving.
