Do you have any mods, i'm lucky to get 230 out of mine.

80k i/h/e and 17's all will affect your mpg, also make sure your air filter is clean, your full filter, your wheel alighnment, tire pressure. Oh and if you have vtec, it drinks gas like a big gulp.

Well, barring mechanical problems, you're simply driving too hard.

If you drive from Full to Empty on the gauge, that's probably about 8 gallons, so you are getting around 30 miles to the gallon, which is about what's expected from any of the Honda engines with VTEC.

if i do a lot of city driving, i get around 220. if i do a lot of highway driving, i get about 280 to the tank, almost 300. and i have standard bolt ons and increased timings. but i have an auto too, and i drive the hell out of it in the city, so that explains the low mileage in the city.

Mine used to do this on Mobil gas. Try Texaco or something and see if it makes a difference. Also, a tune up, like everyone said, should bring your milage back up to par.

First, read this so you know how fuel gauges work:

First, the fuel has to get to the bottom of the float. That's responsible for a bit of initial jumpiness.

Secondly, I think another part might be built up fuel gunk.

My car did this on every tank. I'd get the jump AND I wouldn't hit empty till around 8.5-10 gallons. Totally inconsistent.

Then recently, I switched to Chevron gas, and I ran a little 4oz bottle of Red Line fuel injector cleaner through my tank when I hit about a quarter to a fifth of a tank full, and then my fuel tank got REALLY consistent. No more jumpiness, and I end at Empty right around 8 gallons every time like it's supposed to.

I think that there was a bunch of built up gunk in the tank, and it was making the gauge sticky. What else could it have been if it was that way for 6 months, and then the addition of a cleansing agent fixed it?

Try that out and see if it works for you. The bottle of cleaner costs less than 5 bucks.

Fuel gauges will vary on where they read empty. How many gallons are in an average fillup? If its 9.5, you read empty early, can push that needle some, and are getting reasonable gas mileage.

Civic Fuel Gauges

Heres what I've learned:

Right hand turns and going uphill make your gas gauge go down.
Left hand turns and going downhill make your gas gauge go up.

I never trust my gas gauge, I dont think the bobbers are put in a very good place. Heres what I do:

Every time you fill up, reset your trip odometer, then drive until your fuel gauge reads E...then fill up your car...and take the number of miles on ur trip odometer divided by the number of gallons you put in the car. For me, its usually around 240 miles, and 8 gallons that I refuel....i get about 30mpg in a 93 manual LX w/ intake. My car is slow, so i have to use the gas pedal a lot to get around:) . Hope this helps everyone!

PS I use Mobil Super + 93 octane...is that the reason my gas gauge sucks? Oh well its the cheapest around here....
