For those of you who don't know, there is a way of not having A/C turned on when you're defrosting. Here is what you do:

(1)Before you turn on your car, turn fan speed switch on the way to the left, you temp switch all the way to the left and your other switch to the second position from the left.
(2)Then hold down the recirculation (left) button and A/C (middle) button.
(3)Keep the buttons depressed and start your car
(4)The recirculation light should blink
(5)hold down the buttons until it stop blinking

Now you have complete control over your A/C... the A/C light will still turn on when you defrost but you can now turn off the A/C pressing the A/C button!

hmm... i just have a question but why wouldnt u want the A/C on when defrosting?
just wondering if there's some reason...
or is it just to have control...

and also...

does this need to be done each time when starting the car?
or is it a "once-for-all" kinda thing?

A machanic once told me that when you are warming up the car, you should try to turn everything off before the car starts. i.e. turn off your music system, lights, A/C, etc. cuz the next time you start the car, the battery doesn't have to make such a big "jump"
to compensate for all the electricity required and will result in longer battery life. Same thing applies to A/C but can't remember what it helps.

the reason is that A/C would hurt your gas mileage.
You only have to do the procedure once... just do the same thing to reverse the effect.

If you want A/C on when defrosting just press the A/C button and you have full control over it.

probably helps the A/C unit and the refrigerant (spelling?)

With the A/C on it defrosts way faster then not having it on. This is why they did this, it is not an error. Try it in another car you will see that im right. And that trick for turning it off in the rsx, doesn't work.

Best way to defrost is to turn on the A/C and don't use Re-circulated air.
the best way to defog (get rid of the fog caused by moisture inside the car) is with a/c on and fresh (dry) air ...

if you want to defrost (get rid of the frost outside the car), probably better to use re-circulated air because it is warmer and comes on stronger...

The main reason why the a/c turns on when you defrost it to allow your compressor to come on during the winter months when you don't use the a/c. This helps keep your seals lubricated in your compressor. R-134 doesn't do a very good job of lubing....Not much oil in it. If you don't then the seals will blow....and we know what happens when they blow ;o)

Ok guys. Everything "cloud7" said is absolutely correct. I really don't know how he found out how to do that, but I must say, I am really impressed with that trick and much much happier without that annoying auto a/c mech. Read the instructions he gave carefully and try it out for yourselves. Saves headache. Good shit cloud.
