A nutty idea - Suzuki Hayabusa motor in a CRX

OK, this topic is obviously just a mad idea. It's very unlikely it would ever get built, but lets just discuss it anyway.

Here's what I had in mind. Start with a CRX, and yank the motor and transmission out. Build a custom subframe mount for the Suzuki Hayabusa motor, and then build a custom aluminum differential. There would be a short chain drive from the Busa motor to the diff. Custom alxes would then mate to the differential. Cost would be $3000 - $5000.

The benefit is that you would get this power curve and a crazy 11,000 redline. Plus the motorcycle engine/trans/diff would weigh about 200-250 LBS.

The differential and mounting would look similar to these pictures.

What does a CRX without motor and trans weigh? What would it weigh with manual windows/locks, and no power steering or A/C?

Would it be fun to drive? Hell yeah! Benefits would be a lighter overall weight. The car would have better weight distribution, as there would be less front weight. Obviously there is more power, and a crazy redline. There would also be the benefit of a 6 speed transmission, and an easily adjustable final drive ratio. (Sprockets are easy to change. The rear can be made in two pieces.) It should also get better gas mileage.

So what do you think?

It has been thought of before. But, from what i heard, the hayabusa motor lacked the torque or something. I heard it wasn't even a good swap for the cappacino (little rwd rodster). But, i did hear that some british tuning company did merge 2 hayabusa motors to make a v-8 out of it. I forgot where i read it from, but, i heard it made about 300 ho from 3.2 L? If anyone can find that, it would be great.

wouldnt be worth the money, if you ask me. Lots and lots of custom work, for an engine with around the same power capabilities as a b16, with a less usuable power band, how would you like to drive around town at 9000 rpms just to get some 'go'.

edit: that v8 was in sport compact car. looked good.

The reason I posted the HP/Torque curve was to show how much power the Busa motor makes. A D16 makes roughly the same horsepower at idle, but only makes about 120 HP at just below redline. Both motors make about the same amount of torque. How is the power less useable when it's a steeper HP curve and the same torque? The proof is in the data.

So, why wouldn't it be fast?

To make it a little more understandable, it would be like driving a D16Z6 that made 160 HP near redline, and it's lighter which would make it even faster.

Still think it wouldn't go? But, yes it would be a lot of time and money.

What would a B16 motor swap cost?

I can get a B16A complete for $1700cdn.

Yes, it would be faster than a B16 powered CR-X. But given the fact that it costs way less for a B16, you could use the extra money and make it REALLY fast.

Like I said before it would be pretty cool, but I think it would be way more fun in a K-car or a custom made roadster.

turbo that shit

I agree. There are 'busas out there that put down TONS of power. Yeah, it'd be a little sluggish to 5k or so, but after that would be flat-out ridiculous. Heck, it'll just feel like an S2000! :clap

I do agree with everyone else though. For the same money you could build a B16 to hit that same redline, and have just as much fun.

I'd love to lose all of that weight though!

i totally agree. If your trying to build power, you don't wanna use a a busa engine. it would be sweet, but not worth the time/money, unless you're bored and are rich, then do it.

a busa engine in a go-kart would be sick though. almost deathly for somebody with no idea of the capabilities.
