Hope I'm not about to become a horror story.....

A week or so ago I noticed that my GSR was missing when it idled, rest of the time it ran fine, but when I came to a stoplight it would start missing. The car had 86K miles on it, so I figured I'd take it to my 'local' Acura dealer(70 miles away), and have them check it out and get the 90K service done. Well a coupla days later suddenly the Malfunction lamp comes on, ok now I definitely call and set up an appt for the next day. When I get there they tell me I need to get the timing belt changed(I had always heard change it at 90K, so I agreed), that was over $500. They he says the 90K service was over $400, so I say forget that. Then they look at the car and tell me that the compression on the #2 cyclinder is about 25 lbs less than the other 3, which are normal. And....here's the kicker.....he said they found muddy water in my CAI. Of course he thinks I sucked some water in the engine, however the car is NOT smoking, which suggests to me that it's not the rings or a damaged cylinder. Anyway they are going to adjust the valves tomorrow(another $300), and see if that fixes it.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Oy vey, the whole bypass valve thing again. Well I'm bored, so I'll do it again. My opinion is that the bypass valve is unnecessary. To me it's like wearing a helmet when you walk around, YES the helmet works, but you're not gonna fall. Just pay attention when you drive and you should be fine. Also, the bypass valve robs a good amount of horsepower.

Oh, and about water being in your CAI, don't worry about that. Water in the filter is harmless, the intake will still suck up the air since it's lighter. You're fine.

300 dollars for a valve adjustment? are they out of their fucking minds??? i get mine done for 60 bucks at a local import shop and even at a dealer it about 90 bucks at most....and i have had muddy droplets inside my intake before but they were dry...its ok to get a little bit of water in...it will burn off anyway..i think it only takes either a teaspoon or tablespoon to hydrolock an engine though.

I forgot to mention that they replaced the plugs when i took it in tues. Since then it STILL runs rough at idle, but not as bad, i'm sure that's cause the plugs are new. I've decided to cancel the appt for tomorrow and try to call around here and see if anyone in this area can do the valve adjustment for cheaper. Only problem this is rural Alabama we are talking about, mention you have an Acura that needs work and they panic.

But even the guy at the Acura dealer told me that he didnt know if the valve adjustment would fix the problem, just that they would have to try that and see. The fact that its not smoking is what's confusing me, I know I know next to nothing about cars but that suggests to me that it's NOT a matter of worn rings or cylinder damage. Does that sound right? If so does that suggest that adjusting the valves might fix it or are we shooting in the dark here? Remember he said the compression on one cylinder was low 25 lbs, could adjusting the valves fix that?

sorry to hear about your engine...hope you fix it.

BTW how do you know that the muddy water (great pun..since you are indeed muddying the waters and that hydrolock would have grenaded the engine if i was real) is not coolant?

Did you change your plug wires ?? If you haven't, change them and see what happens. They are on Crack 300 bills for a valve adjustment !! But then again from the sounds of it they can charge whatever they want cuz they monopolized the market in your area.
