Al and Bobby Unser Arrested in Albuquerque

Albuquerque, N.M. – 8/10/2006 Bobby Unser claimed he and brother Al Sr. did "zero wrong" in the incident with Bernalillo County police.

Brothers Al Unser Sr. and Bobby Unser, who combine for seven Indianapolis 500 wins, were arrested yesterday at Bernalillo County in New Mexico.

At separate times and on different cars, both Unsers tried to cross a police roadblock on their way to the family's property in the outskirts of Albuquerque. The area had been shut off by police during a carjacking pursuit which ended with the criminal crashing his car and shooting himself.

"[The officers] simply told them numerous times to leave the area and they simply refused to do so," Erin Kinnard Thompson, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. "We're not talking about a situation where we're trying to catch a shoplifter. This was a serious and dangerous situation."

The brothers were both detained for resisting arrest and later released, at circa 3:30 a.m.

Bobby Unser told Albuquerque TV station KOB-TV that Al and himself "didn't do anything wrong. Zero wrong."

County Sheriff Darren White released a statement on Wednesday backing his deputies' action, which included taking Al Sr. down to handcuff him.

"It's not uncommon for officers to be riddled with insults from people we arrest," he said. "It's deplorable when it comes from someone who is considered a respected member of our community."
