Amp for Solo Barics

1519 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  koveintegra
I have a MTX road thunder 2600 amp and i wanted to know if it would be enough to power two Kicker Solo Baric L5's (not L7's). The subs can take 450rms each and my amp puts out 750rms bridged and 351rms per channel @ 2ohms. I have heard that the solo's are REALLY power hungry and they don't sound right without sufficient power. Will 350rms per sub be enough?

hey

i would do atleast 500wrms per sub u could probly go alittle higher to..........DO NOT under power those subs or they will sound like sh!t

Don't listen to this guy... you never ever put more power to a sub than it is designed to handle... you'll blow your subs that way... if it can handle 450 rms then you would be fine with something even as low as 250 rms... that would be plenty... the power rating determines the "power hungriness" of the subs..

You won't blow your subs by over powering them. Unless its like 2000 watts to one of those. The only way you'll ever blow a sub is by sending it way way too much power, or by sending it a distorted signal. IF you send your amp into clipping and it sends your subs distortion, then you will blow your subs. Those L5s can take 1000 watts a piece easily. They are the same as last year's L7s with the exception of the basket. DISTORTION KILLS SUBS!!!
I'm not trying to argue... you don't exceed rms on woofer to rms on amp or vice versa... you just don't... there are reasons why they give those numbers... it also won't do you any good because the woofers are only designed to handle so much.... you turn up the volume and your amp puts out too much juice and it's no good.. that's all there is to it... more amps also cost more money, and you won't be able to use that extra power in a pair of less power handling..
For him, that's easily enough power to run to those subs. But those subs can take a lot more. True the rms powerhandling is there for a reason. Subs can only take a certain amount of power, before they start to overheat. But the solos can definitely take 1000 watts.
hey

man i know from experiance that if u give to little power the the solo L5 or 7 they sound bad..... the subs in general do not sound that good but in the right box will go hella loud.... and rms does not mean as soon as u go over poof your subs blows i have seen a 10" subs take 12000wrms for 3 burbs only breaking on the last one when the cone folded over its self...... if u r into spl u could probly give the lL5 1g of power per woffer...... for daily driving i would say at least 500wrms for sure....... also if u want any help designing a box for a specific aplication i can help u just tell me what u want the subs to do and how much power u plan on using....

hope this helps

he is right the distortion is what kills subs. but for a newbie 750 will be good.
I use a dx-700 with a birth certificat of 841w to run a pair of solo L7(well I guess they call em l5s now) 12"s and they are definately happy. I have a friend with a bd1500 running the same subs and they bottom out like mad, and we both had about the same volume(well he has more juice, but I build better boxes. I think 350-500 is happy for them.
I have a punch 500a2 running an L7. It hits fine.
My L7 is capable of 777watts. I'm only running about 450.
......

this is what i use and i think its great:D

That's one of the funniest things that I've ever heard. If you have ever been involved in designing something, there is always a fos (factor of safety) involved. That means that the widget (whatever you are building) has the capability of being pushed beyond its design specs - within reason of course.
You CAN exceed rms ratings on subs...On SOME subs rms ratings are there only for warranty reasons. Take for example the Solo L7, I've sent 1500 watts to one 12 and it rocked! Never messed up at all! BUT!!!! You have to look at your thd%. You can't send 1000 watts of dirty power to a sub that only rms's at 500 watts. I myself use USamps which have a .006% thd. I run Kove Armageddon Z's that rms at like 750 watts. I run 1300 to them all day long! They are loud and they sound awsome! On a solo L7 12 I would run a US 1000 which puts out 1300 watts! Do it in a ported box to specs and it'll give out more bass than 3 round 12's.
