My L and R outer CV joint boots tore recently, and I am going to replace the boots only. I have the kits which include the grease, and straps as well. I am just wondering if anyone has any tips on what to watch out for, or what I should expect timewise.

In case you were going to suggest buying new driveshafts, that is out of the question. My budget won't permit it. :(

The service manual calls for a special tool called a ball joint remover (ball joint is part of suspension). Is this a necessary tool, or does it just simplify somewhat?

Also, what should I do to clean the joints once I have the old boots off? Dealer just said to wipe it down a little bit. Is this sufficient?

I don't expect to have to remove the driveshaft from the differential case, so do I still have to drain transmission oil?

Thanks in advance!

If you know of a website that illustrates this, that would be most excellent!

Perfect! There is an AutoZone about 5 minutes away. I really appreciate the info. I hope they can also lend me a torque wrench that goes to 180 lb-ft (spindle nut torque spec.).

I was wondering how obvious it is if dirt actually has gotten into bearing races. I don't know exactly how long boot has been torn because I never thought to check, and I hadn't rotated tires in a while. But, I know for sure that one broke within 100 miles, so hopefully they are on the same schedule. Hehe.

I forgot to say, I have been working on it with a friend, and we got to the point where we were looking at the outboard joint. So, the rotor was rotated out of the way and the damper fork is off.

We can't remove the outer joint from the driveshaft. I am thinking I should do this so I can just slide the boot on from the outboard side.

Do I have to remove entire driveshaft and disassemble the inboard joint instead??? That might be easier, cuz it is just a spider and rollers.

Let me know if you have done this.

Again, I appreciate the response, but if you would just like to suggest replacing entire driveshaft, please save a post. I seriously cannot afford that at all. Just the $50 for the boots is a lot for me right now. My financial situation may change soon, and then I can consider it, but right now, I need to get to school on Monday, and I need to get this done! :)
