4597 Views 42 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  NationsMostWanted
i bought one of those ghetto shortshifters from pepboys. wat exactly is those 2 washer looking things for? some reason the car doesnt go into gear as smooth as it used to with stock shifter. is this normal? we greased it up and it goes in smooth like stock sometimes...but most of time it dont? i just dont want to damage my tranny. guys give me ur opinions and tell me how ur shortshifter works. mine goes into gear but it feels stiff and u could feel a click sound as if u feel it going in to each gear. but its not grinding or nothing. wats the problem u think??i wanan get it to go into gear smooth. or is it gona damage anything if i leave it as is? trannys cost a fortune to fix.

i think you answered your own question with the first sentence...

and for christ sake just make a wed site so ppl don't have to waste time scrolling past your fudging list of "mods"
I am not ragging on you because you got the APC shortshifter, but that is mostlikely the reason. I put one in my friends car, just does not sit in there as tight as the stock shifter. Oh and I would not worry, it should not do anything to the tranny.
I'm about to purchase a short shifter too...I was going to go with the DC but my friend just snapped the top of his dc off while he was shifting.

What are some other good brands?
Will the skunk2 also lower the shifter height?
What short through shifters also lower the height??? I think most do, but I'm not sure. I deff want it to be a little bit lower.
APC aint bad!

I bought an APC short shifter for my 95 Lx. It works perfectly and greatly reduced my throw and the height is much less. Just make sure you dont tighten the pivot bolt that goes through the bottom too tight or it will make it much stiffer and not as accurate of a shift. My friend bought a hurst short shifter and it doesnt seem half as good as mine and its much higher too.
i put one of the pep boys shortshifter in my friends car and i didn't shift smooth. the reason i didn't shift smooth b/c we tighten the bolt to tight. all u have to do i loosen it a little and it should be smoother. :) let me know if that fixed it
you dont lower height with a short shifter, you do that with a knob, most ball type knobs will be an inch or more lower than the stocker ergo style, as for what one to get, lots of ppl swear by DC's but i've also heard about them breaking, b&m make a couple that are good quality, personaly i like the skunk2 it's going on my car in a week when my header shows up... but if i had it my way i'd be installing a C's shifter, but with a price tag of $300 i'll pass, even thou it's the nicest i've ever felt and shortens the throw by a mile
where the 2 washer things do

No the short shifer def lowers it too. My buddy has a dc with a stock knob...It is lower.
I have a DC Sports short shift and love it. It shortened the throw and lowered the height.
ok, well i guess the DC lowers the height, i'll let cha all know if my skunk2 does the same

BTW asianpride559 shorten you sig please, no one cares about your sound system, light bulbs and euro tail light, keep it nice and simple and just make a web site with the full list
I don't have a Skunk2 short shifter, but if I did not get my short shifter for christmas from my bestfriend I would go with Skunk2 it has a knob on it already. Which is sweet because it actually makes the price more reasonable.
surprised no one has mentioned the fact that many short shifters rattle.....ive heard that DC Sports short shifter is notorious for rattling. im not sure about the other companies such as SKunk2, B&M and Neuspeed but it was my belief that many people chose not to purchase a short shifter because of the obnoxious rattling sound it makes against the exhaust or some other part of the undercarriage?
so in conclusion any body have tranny problems cuz of ur shortshifter? cuz i feel mine would but since u guys say that as long as i dont grind then its coo
I don't think you will have tranny problems. And like everyone else has mentioned...can you shorten your sig? I mean, it's nice that you got all that stuff, but I don't think every SHO member cares that much...just a suggestion :)
My short shifter does hit the exhaust, but I never hear it rattle. I also lowered the pipe, so I could go even shorter on my shifter. I would not recomend anyone lower the pipe much more though just because if your car is lowered it will hit anything and everything. Oh and about thoughs metal washers I read earlier, I have no clue what they are for but we left them out on my friend's Tegra, and it shifts great.

we put one of them where the ball of shifter is cuz only one fits and we greased it up and it goes into gear a little smoother now but still stiff and not smooth at times. but im satisfied since i t dont grind.
i have the neuspeed short shifter, and it is a nice kit. Not NEARLY as short as other kits out there, but shifts are a lot more accurate, and each shift has a sort of "click" into place. 20% shorter throws, but if i had to do it again, i would either go with the DC Sports kit or the Skunk 2 kit.
