Buldging Radiator hose

1201 Views 18 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  TegFanatic
After I cracked my radiator, I had it replaced with a C&R Racing Radiator. Afterwards (I may have had this problem before the radiator replacement, but never noticed it), I noticed that my upper radiator hose was buldging. I had them replaced with OEM hoses (both of them).

Anyway, it's been sometime now, and it is still budging. I tested to see if it was from hard driving, so this morning, I started it up, and drove to my gf's house (less then 5 miles). I never rev-ed the car past 3-4 thousand RPMs, but due to traffic, it may have taken about 10 minutes.

It still buldges. If the diameter of the upper hose is 1.5 inches, the buldging hose is nearing 3 inches. It is buldging where the hose connects to the engine. My car never goes even half way on temperature meter.

anyone have any idea why this may be from?

im not trying to sound stupid but what does bulding mean? ive never heard of this word b4. also i read ur post like 3 times and i dont seem 2 understand what ur saying or asking here. ive replaced my raditor with a aftermarket raditor. its not a better cooling raditor its just a regular raditor that is way cheaper n price compared 2 the dealer. anyways, even after i changed raditors my car would still get hot and the reason 4 that was because of my thermostat. once i changed that it was all good. if ur having heat problems then it could u thermostat is out.
I'm going to take a wild shot at this...but I'm thinking it could be your thermostat, which isn't opening all the way once your car is 'fully awake'. Thats what it seems like to me, since you said that the buldging is occuring near the engine block and your temp. gauge isn't even going halfway. Sounds like the coolant isn't being able to flow through the thermostat and is creating that bulding effect in your hose...
sounds interesting.... I'll have to look at my helms and see if I should swap it out and see....

and for wU-racer... "buldge" is like when you get hard, your penis gets bigger.... hence the "buldge in your pants."

it's actually bulge.:)
thanks. I guess me and racer both looked like idiots
hahahahah
I'm sure you did, but I'll go for the obvious answer first. Did you remember to bleed the system when you put new coolant in?
I had my mechanic do it - a guy that does everything on my car. Think it's possible that it slipped his mind?

If it was bled... the coolant went low so I put some more in, also I opened the cap of the radiator...

does it need to be bled again?
The bulging is the result of the inner lining of the hose failing and pressure is building up between the two layers of radiator hose......... Im not sure if I had read your post right but did you replace the hoses when you swapped out the radiator or are the hoses you got on your car the same ones???? Its a failing hose from what you described just go out and buy a new one should fix your problem
these are brand new. they were installed after I had my radiator installed because the old ones were bulging. Now the new ones are doing the same thing the old ones did.

faulty hose? I should get a new one?

It might have slipped his mind. He might have thought it not neccessary. It can be kind of messy if you haven't done it before. Have plenty of rags ready.
Anyone know where the bleeder valve may be on the C&R Racing Radiator?

no, but just look at the bottom of the radiator, on the passenger side. if my intuition tells me anything, it'll be close to the stock location.

You're referring to the drain plug. The bleed bolt is where the main hose connects to the engine. I own a G2, but I think it's the same all the way up. Follow the hose to the engine and look for a 10mm bleed bolt angled towards the front of the engine bay.
the bleeder is on the engine? I was under the impression that the bleeder valve (or whatever you want to call it) is on the radiator itself.

what am I trying to bleed here? the coolant in the engine or the radiator?

now I'm confused.

The Drain is on the Radiator (to drain the system). The Bleeder Valve is on the engine (to bleed air out of the system). You are trying to bleed all of the air out of the system.
Hey I got off my lazy ass and looked in my helms. I bled the system, I really don't know if that fixed the problem since the inner lining on my upper hose was already damaged, it still bulges. I think I'm gonna opt for some steel braided hoses.

You may also take better care with your mixture next time. Going into winter, so 50/50 is good, in the summer though I use more water than coolant and add water-wetter.
