Car and Driver’s NASCAR Joke Retracted

Car and Driver magazine is apologizing after publishing a story on April Fools' Day about President Obama ordering Chevrolet and Dodge to pull out of their NASCAR sponsorships.

Even though the story was clearly labeled as an April Fools' joke, it has sparked plenty of comments and fear online.

Obama recently asked GM President Rick Wagoner to step down at a time when the auto industry has been in crisis. The magazine quickly realized that the story went too far and pulled it from their site.

The original story read as follows:

"In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globe -- Honda and Audi, to name two -- have drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending. A complete withdrawal from America's premier racing series is expected to save more than $250 million between GM and Chrysler, a substantial amount considering the drastic measures being implemented elsewhere."

Car and Driver says it has a "proud tradition of irreverent editorial and we amplify that each year with our April Fools' Day joke."
