cranking is "turning over the engine" basically letting the engine's crank shaft turn, be it half-rotaton or one complete turn.

"An internal combustion engine gets pressure on a piston from burning gasoline in air. The piston is pushed by the expanding hot gasses from heat energy released in combustion. "

Heres a pic of pistons cranking...cranking over....over turning

nice article jayman...i was reading how a comp test was done and it says to press the gas all the way down and turn the ignition on and let the engine crack over five times....so after i turn the ignition on, do i let off on the gas or leave my foot on it?
