it depends what kinda custom turbo you want. you can go junkyard style, w/ a turbo from an eclipse or something like that. that would probably run you around a grand.
or you can do a badass custom turbo setup which will cost around or more than a drag kit.
give us some more details on what you're after.. what motor, etc..

intercooler
oil feed/return lines
intake for the turbo
blow off valve
thats just off the top of my head.. i'm sure there's more.. but that should be the main stuff right there and u can find that for pretty cheap at a junk yard
you can run the turbo w/out the intake if you just put a screen or something like that on it.. you'd be better off w/ atleast a filter somewhere though.. dont want dirt getting in there

you'll need an fmu too

1.custom manifold
2.older thunderbird turbo....garrett t3super60 i believe(has a internal wastegate
3.a decent intercooler(starion is a nice size FMIC)
4.blow off valve...cheapest good one is a 1st gen eclipse bov
5.couple (2)oil lines with fittings
6.oil drain welded onto oil pan
7.custom piping fabricated(not that hard) 8.silicone hoses
9. fuel managemnet unit
10.hiflo fuel pump
11. ignition setup
12.boost gauge
13)vacuum lines ...for bov and boost gauge
14)some sort of check valve to fool your map sensor

this is fairly wat youll need good enough to boost 8lbs

Hook up junkyard turbo parts and public forum parts... I got mine COMPLETE for approx 900$ includes:

Garrett T3 AR 42/48 200$
RevHard Hi-ductile manifold for B series CRX 175$
Greddy Piping $FREE
89' Starion IC $120
Turbonetics Deltagate Mark II $120
Downpipe speedy 90$
Greddy Profec Spec "A" 290$ (not in the 900$ :) but gees thats cool )
Walbro 244 Hi-pressure pump 119$
Missing Link 25$
Vortech FMU 12:1 80$
DSM 1G BOV $FREE

And the fun thing is that YOU BUILD IT YOURSELF DAMMIT! So that if somethings happens, you'll now how to troubleshoot the thing and make appropriate repairs, not spend 300$ at the local speed shop...and not getting that Greddy Profec Spec "A" hehehe

Drive safe but FAST!
