I think the worst feeling ever is when your clutch completly fries in traffic. Not good. If you don't want to be calling one of your friends to come get you, then pay to get your car towed, definatly fix it before it becomes a serious problem, like you said, I usuially wait until it shows signs of rough gear engagement. Then don't screw around and get it to the shop.
