Veteran Champ Car engineer Don Halliday was regarded as one of the biggest strengths of the Fernandez Racing team this year. Until yesterday, when via a terse announcement, the team revealed that Halliday had left the team to "pursue other options" in motorsport.
Halliday only joined Fernandez Racing last December, working with team co-owners Adrian Fernandez and Tom Anderson. He took on the role of technical director and race engineer for Fernandez. However, the Mexican racer and his teammate Shinji Nakano have endured a disappointing season. The team has yet to score a victory in nearly two years of racing in CART.
Fernandez had a particularly acrimonious exit from the most recent FedEx Championship Series race at Rockingham Speedway, when he was dropped from CART scoring after failing to acknowledge a black flag for a pit speed violation. Whether this, or the Honda-powered team's future plans, have any bearing on Halliday’s departure is not clear.
