i need to practice braking to avoid emergencies. I dont have abs and my wheels locked up a few times when i had to make sudden stops. my question is how do i know when i am overheating the brakes and what can i break if i do about 10 40-0 hard brakes and swerves without hitting anything. i would rather practice now that get into a accident. ive been driving for 2 yrs btw. i took defensive driving course last yr. anyone?

i had the same year... wrecked it.. new car, still no ABS... my friend and i were playing around and now when we want to stop in like rain or something like that so we can still have control of the car just tap the brakes repeatedly, gran turismo style. it's like a combination of left foot braking and normal right foot... i know it sounds stupid but if your practicing might wanna give it a try... prolly wear out your brakes tho hehe
they should make every car abs...my wheelz locked when i had my accident....

kleankord is describing cadence braking...
For vehicles without ABS the driver can, in certain situations stillachieve effective braking by what's known as cadence braking. The word`cadence' means with rhythm, and although can never replace ABS it is still an effective tool in the non-ABS driver's toolbox. To apply cadence braking the driver/rider simply pumps the footbrake rhythmically. As the front of the vehicle dips down under full heavy braking, the driver releases the footbrake (and perhaps can now regain some steering control) then reapplies firm pressure onto the footbrake, releases, reapplies and soon, pumping the brake rhythmically (but not bouncing the pedal off the floor) until braking is no longer required and control is regained.

There's a name for it?! bad ass.. we just kalled it DBS, the Danny Braking system... where did you quote that from? some sort of driving technique manual? i wanna read it..
i adjusted my brake booster to counter the affects of tire lock up...i lowered it jsut a bit so it wont hella lock up...forgot how i did it though
cool i will try out the braking advice thx. ztech so your tires dont lock up anymore when you brake?
yea jsut pump them...dont hold them down...push down hard then let back and push down more..you wotn lock up as hard...if i had time i downshift at the same time...but there are some tings u cant avioid
here is a good advice

drive slow, so u wont have to worry about it:D be goin at like 55 on the freeway on da slow lane;)
o my bad i didnt read the rest of ur post...umm my tires dont lock up ne more..but that can also be cause of my 10 dollar brake pads..hahahahahh...but i got to learn how to adjust them....this weekend im redoing my break system...going to go for some ceramic pads this time...i bet once i put those in i can lock up my breaks....ill learn how to adjust the breaks safely...keep in touch
