help!!! motor mounts from block broke!!

2424 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  GreekSpeed
I'm in despearte need of advice...I brought my car out to acura and they found that my motor mount on the bottom was misalinged and had bolts loose. The bad part is the mount from the top that connects to the block has broken off and the engine has a slight lean. They say I need to get a new motor. I dunno if the engine mount is broken off...shouldn't the engine constantly shake when I turn on the car?......The problem that I do have is that when I drive the engine jerks as I drive and shifting problems. I know for sure its not the clutch b/c the jerking and shifting problems happen intermittedly. Man the engine is a 98ls and its has only 40k miles on it. I asked if they can weld it and they say it is not possible. Plus they want to charge me 1800 for a motor with 64k miles and then charge 1800 for labor. I'm like with that price I should just swap a gsr and pay a little extra more. Anyone with advice please do say!!! Thanks....

It is possible to weld it...... my friend welded a custom solid steel front mount on his b20z block......................it took a lot of time but he and a friend of his that was a good welder got it done and it works great now......

it took a lot of time to make it all line up perfect, before the welding
my b20 shortblock had one of the mounting bolt area welded. i bought it like that. it's been a year now with some "abusive" driving and there are no signs of wear or cracking on the "repaired" site. check ur local machine shops and see if they can fix the problem for u.
that is a sik teg randyman
I would definitely get a second opinion and here's why:

I brought my car to an Acura Dealership because I was having problems getting my car into gear between 3000-6000 rpm. An hour later, the Service Manager informs me that I broke a few bits off the synchros and I'll need a whole new tranny. Cost - $3400 including a new clutch and labor. I almost dropped my jaw when I heard the amount of money it was going to cost me. So, I told him that I'll need to think about what I was going to do.

Wanting a second opinion, I took my car to a Honda-Acura Specialist, whom was recommended to me by a handful of people, some who have been doing business with these guys for well over 7 years. I drop my car off in the morning and I get a call during lunch. Here is what he told me: "The tranny is fine. The only thing you'll need is a new clutch cuz one of the springs popped out. It'll run you around $200 plus labor." I had them replace my clutch and when I took the car home, it felt brand new. Not only was I happy that I had my car running right again, but I saved over $3000 on something that was unecessary.

I have never gone back to Stevens Creek Acura in San Jose since that day and I mailed a very harsh letter to that fuck who tried to take money.

Sorry so long....

Damn crooks are everywhere nowadays...just make sure what the Mech said was true and no BS. COme on a 98 teg with motor mount issues already??? I doubt that but like gizzzer said...its never bad to get a second opinion

Especially if they're tellin' you that you need a new motor...
I just had the same problem and I took it to a shop and they taped out the old bolts and put new ones in and all the did was loosen all the motor mounts and raise the motor and take them out it cost me $280.
You guys are right...I went out and asked for second opinions but I still haven't gotten straight answers...one mechanic says its my transmission..like the teeth and running over each other...and one mechanic says it engine related like distributor or something...
right now I don't know what to do...bottom line I don't want to put out boo koo $ and get fuked...I'm skeptical about the acura dealership though..cause common sense tell me if my motor mount did break from the block...wouldn't my engine shake on idel and at other times erratically???.....all my car is doing is jerking when i'm crusing or while i shift....like wen I'm on 1st...car slowly pulls..stays at 1500 to 2000k rpm and then bam kick in and car pulls and repeats itself on all the other gears...but thanks guys for all your suggestions...I'm just gonna have to go around and ask someone for a guarantee that they'll be able to fix it..but I doubt anyone have guarantees...

my guess is that you should sound more like you know a little about what you're dealing with, or find a friend or relative with a shop/mechanic that they trust.
wait...have u even looked to see if the motor mount is actually broke?
cause it would look pretty obvious if it was...

you guys are right.... dealer ships are fucking idiots...... i had to correct the honda/acura mechanics about some shit when i was having some minor problems with my car.....and i ended up fixign it myslef....

if u have the time and the resources to do it urself.............do it ur self..
I just brought my car to a honda/acura specialist that deals with ls/vtec and other stuff...They told me it got nothing to do with my motor mounts.... they said my motor mount bolts were loose because of my engine misfiring...giving it jerks when I drive. That probably loosen my motor mounts on the bottom and making the acura dealer think that my mount to the block broke...luckily I took ya guys advice and went around getting opinions. Thanks guys for all your help....:)
