shit, i already had an idea the piston ring on my 4th piston was bad. was i was checking out my engine, i pick up the spark plug wires. the 4th one was drenched in oil. i dont even see how it could have worked in a condition like that.

my question is: is there oil in there (area between spark plug wire and top of spark plug) because my piston ring is busted, or could it be something else.

it is causing my car to really smoke badly.

thanks in advance.

If it's between the plug and the wire it would suggest that the plug had come loose allowing oil to pass the threads that locate it into the head.

Just torque it down again and it should be fine........

actually, i already did that, my father was helping me out also. we took out the plug and and the wire for the 4th cylinder and cleaned them off good. it seems like oil is slowing getting in there again.. darnit!

any suggestions of what the problem could be, piston rings i presume

there is no oil in the radiator tank. whew! thanks guys

ummm you say the oil was on the top half of the spark plug right? you didnt say if there was oil on the electrode though.
my guess is there was a bad seal around the sparkplug hole. between the valve cover and and head there is absically an o ring to keep oil from leaking out....i had 2 of those seals fail and the spark plug holes would fill up with oil every few weeks. i am willing to bet that is mroe likely the cause if there was only oil on the top half of the plug...

sorry to not mention that, but the electrode, i recall, was also drenched in oil, i remember this because my dad had to wipe it clean and i was asking if the plug would even work in such conditions.

whats the difference if there is oil on the bottom?
and about the "o" ring for the top of the plug, is that easy to change and how would would it cost?

my car smokes alot too, so darnit!

Looks to me like you've got your self busted piston rings especially as the car is smoking:( Best bet is to rebuild the block and change the rings b4 it all goes BOOOM!!

the o-rings are a few bucks each.
when i first discovered oil all all over my sparkplug the entire plug was coated....cause the top half was und 2 inches of oil and when i pulled the plug, obviously all the oil flowed down into the cylinder. i wiped the plugs off, threw them back in, and pulled them again later that day before the oil levels in the sparkplug hole could fill up and it wa sonly the top half...

have you considered a compression test? that will tell you if the piston rings are bad....

Valve cover gasket. Its a 15 min fix.

i agree with the last post, before you or anyone assumes its a piston ring, change the valve cover gasket and spark plug gaskets, cause its a fraction of the cost of an engine or a ring R&R, and its also most likely the case. do this first, its cheap and easy to do. if thats dont help, go get a compression test, leak down test, ect.

laterz...

sounds like a good idea, how much is a valve cover gasket? and from the earlier post it seems pretty easy and only takes 15 minutes,

the biggest question i have is, can a broken valve cover gasket and broke "o" rings on the plugs cause the car to smoke, because if it cant, then it certainly wont help with the smoking of the car.

my aim is : sinnerxftk

if anyone would just like to explin it to me that way, thansk guys
