According to recent reports in the British media former Formula One driver Johnny Herbert is close to securing a drive in the US-based CART Championship for this season. Herbert has been in talks with Sigma Autosport's team boss Gerard Hermsen with regards to teaming up with Max Papis for 2002.

Herbert said goodbye to Formula One at the end of the 2000 season and has often told the press that while he wants to continue driving he is happy to be away from the politics that govern F1. Although he already has a drive in sportscar racing with Audi lined up for this season, the Brit is keeping the possibility of CART open and could choose to make the switch.

Herbert said: "My motivation is high to do it, and I hope it happens because it would be good for both sides. Sigma seem to be pushing hard, but with all these things, it's not done until it's done."

Meanwhile Hermsen is hopeful of securing Herbert's services for 2002 and partnering him with Papis. He said: “There's a fair chance it will happen. We've been talking to Johnny and would love to run him. He's a great guy and a great racing driver."
