The D16y7 and y8's share the same bottom end right? The only difference between them being the Vtec head on the y8? (I mean, aside from the ecu, gear ratios and other obvious things related to the y7 being non-vtec and all...)

So would the upgrades civic1999 is doing to his y8 have similar benefits for a y7?

Just curious... I know a swap is the best way to really upgrade power in an LX, but I'm always interested in less expensive alternatives. :D

Yes it would. You might want to look into a d16y8 head swap. It should be fairly inexpensive, you get vtec and another 20hp out of it. Add the cam and pistons and you are probably looking at a nice setup for probably under $1000. Thats great considering that a b16 swap will run you $3k after installation.

Hmmm, I like this idea... but if I swap the heads, what else needs to be swapped? ECU to control the v-tec obviously, but does the EX use the same cat/o2 sensors layout as the LX? Would I have change wiring harness?

I suppose if I do I/H/E with the head swap that'll solve a few of those issues...

Or I could just buy an EX or SI and start from there... :)

how high of a compression ratio was your friend running?
i've personally run 11.2:1 on 93 pump gasoline with nothing other than very mild tuning done on a v-afc. the key to getting everything to run correctly is TUNING. your friend was either running above a 12:1 or he was completely ignorant of his car's state of tune. also i believe 117 octane is leaded fuel. his aluminum block and head would have lasted about fifteen minutes with leaded gasoline, unless i'm mistaken the two don't react very well.
Yeah you brought up a good point how 117 is leaded, I think that kid is a lair, I am going to go smack him and find out what he's really got.

The first thing you should do is swap in the EX tranny! Your stock ECU and internals will let you run over 7K rpms (I do it daily on my DX!:) ). You'll get the most performance gain just from that, since torque on the Y7 is higher at lower RPM than the Y8 even though peak torque is slightly higher with the Y8.

But the VTEC conversion will boost the top end. The internals aren't exactly the same, the pistons are different but if you are swapping in the A6 pistons it doesn't matter anyways. But if you keep your Y7 pistons and put a Y8 head on you will actually have slightly more compression than a stock Y8, based on some figuring I've done...

The converter/exhaust is different from LX/EX, but it's no big deal just get stuff for the EX and then get an EX or aftermarket cat and your good. The O2 sensors I think are the same but the 2nd one is in a different location. You can solve this with an EX harness or by extending the O2 sensor leads.

By the way, if anyone wants A6 pistons, I have a source so tell me the best price you can get and I'll see if I can do better... ;)

actually a tuned 12 cr CAN be run on pump gas. anything higher than that and you'd need race gas/octane booster. anyway ya there's no reason to run 117 octane (or whatever the top octane level is for unleaded) unless you're running 30 psi of boost. you can run 13 cr on around 100 octane safely.
