"Top Certified Used
Vehicle Programs

Honda, Jaguar take top honors in annual judging.

The best certified used vehicle programs are at Honda and Jaguar, according to an annual ranking by Primedia's IntelliChoice.
The 2001 results put Honda at the top of non-luxury automakers for the third straight year.

Jaguar won top spot among luxury marques. It's second time in the last three years that Jaguar's program placed first in the upscale category.

IntelliChoice noted there were 23 certified used vehicle programs in 2001, and they offer different benefits. Interested buyers can check for details on each program at automaker Web sites and at dealerships.

IntelliChoice rates used vehicle certification programs based on the following criteria: the car items that are inspected during the certification process; warranty coverage provided on the used vehicles; what kind of roadside assistance benefits are available; and whether there are return or exchange policies for the used vehicles.

Honda, for example, which IntelliChoice reports as having the best warranty, provides a limited powertrain warranty for up to seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the vehicle's original in-service date. Honda also covers many non-powertrain items for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the date of delivery of the certified used vehicle.

Lincoln had the best inspection list, according to IntelliChoice. The 141-point list included test driving the vehicle, checking its history and ensuring at least 50 percent of the tread depth is still on the tires.

"Several of the luxury vehicle manufacturers have made significant improvements to their offerings," said John Hammond, president of Primedia's IntelliChoice, based in Campbell, Calif.

He noted that Audi, Jaguar and Volvo improved the list of items they inspect and Audi extended its used vehicle warranty.

Honda officials said their certified used vehicle program helps bring new buyers to Honda.

"More than 80 percent of the buyers of certified pre-owned Honda vehicles are buying a Honda for the first time," said Jeff Conrad, assistant vice president of dealer relations at American Honda Motor Co. Inc. "We consider used cars as a key entry to the Honda family, so it's important for us to have the best used car program and the best used car warranty."
