Honda Will Reduce Business Trips to China Amid Rising Tensions

April 7 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., the first Japanese automaker to build vehicles in China, said it will cut back Japanese employees' business trips to the country in reaction to rising anti-Japanese sentiment.

Honda, which has three car assembly factories in China, has told Japanese employees to avoid attracting attention and moving around in groups, said President Takeo Fukui, speaking to journalists at a car presentation in Tokyo today.

Honda, which generates more profit than any other Japanese carmaker in China, is counting on demand in Asia's second-largest economy for a fifth consecutive year of record earnings. Chinese protesters attacked Japanese retailers including Ito-Yokado Co. and Aeon Co. earlier this month to show opposition to Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

``We are getting worried about the situation,'' Fukui told a group of reporters in Tokyo. He said there has not been any direct impact on the company's business.

Honda's vehicle sales in China surged 72 percent to 217,720 units in 2004, aided by its Fit compact car and Accord sedan. Honda has two car assembly factories in Guangzhou, southern China, where it produces Accord, Fit Saloon sedans, Fit compact cars and Odyssey minivans. It also runs Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co. in Wuhan and assembles CRV sport-utility vehicles.

Sino-Japanese tensions are increasing, including over competition for energy resources in the East China Sea and a joint U.S.-Japanese defense statement earlier this year naming Taiwan as a security concern. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province.

Honda shares rose 0.5 percent to 5,630 yen in Tokyo.

It's not just the Communists, but the S. Koreans too. They're ticked off at japans bid for a Security Council seat, territorial disputes over some islands, and most recently a proposed text book that in the eyes of the koreans, minimizes japanese atrocities commited prior to their capitulation in WWII.

There's a lot of old history in that part of the world and memories run pretty deeply.

seriously its a lil freaky cuz asians can be crazy at times hahahahah (im asian) but yeah if China and S. Korea are antisemetic towards Japan for wanting a secure seat in the UN then there has to be something else going on...i see a war amidst us...of course the US will be pulled into it cuz they have to back up Japan and at the same time China and N. Korea are considered part of the "Axis of Evil" and N. Korea is producing "weapons of mass destruction" LOL too many things going on...
