The dealer told me that my water pump is leaking and needs to be replaced. This is on a 96 accord LX, 4dr.

Dealer told me 569$ to replace it.

Its not really that hard. If you can change your timming belt then you can change your water pump. The hard part will be putting all the balance shafts back in timing. I think...... There is two belts, I don't remember if the one in the back runs the water pump or the one infront of it. ? But its not that hard.

taking out the water pump

drain the radiator
loosen the bolts for power steering and alternator
take out those belts
lift up the engine and take out the side motor mount (or at least relieve the stress so the bolts can be taken out)
take off the timming belt cover
squeeze in there and get them little screws i hate...u have to have the right tools for those..
take off timming belt when everythingi is out
take off the balancer belt and then take out the water pump.

it makes a mess...it may be simple how i said it but trust me, its a good 4 hour job for me. dont do it if u have ANY doubt.

the hard parts are the screws...very hard to get to..

569...kinda normal. here is what u can do.

u call honda and ask for their price to change the timming belt and water pump. ask if there is any deals that are around....

sometimes they include a valve adjustment in it too but wont do it if they are scronny...then get the dudes name and go there and say this is the price the dude gave me on the phone.

another alternative like someone said, take it to a trusty mechanic...it wont be less that 300 ill tell u that....

that still expensive
i paid my neighboor to guide me for $170
parts around $150 (* cheap ass *)
$336 is not expensive neither is $420 to have honda do your timing belt and water pump right. this not the type of work i would trust to some hack mechanic or backyard wrench turner. also how most people don't have the tools or knowledge to this work.

you paid 170+150=$320, an extra $100 for the average non-mechanically inclined sound like a deal. since i know the dealer my 20% off is not much more than your deal. imo, you got ripped off.
