Here's a log from IRC that took place a few weeks back with me and a friend (my computer has been on for over a month now), luckily I didn't close mIRC.

Code:
[SIZE=2][19:32:09] <rvns> i converted them all from .flv to divx
[19:32:11] <rvns> ya
[19:32:13] <rice> wthax
[19:32:14] <rice> how
[19:32:14] <rice> haha
[19:32:22] <rvns> some program called total video convertor
[19:32:27] <rvns> just go to the temp internet files and convert[/SIZE]
Personally I haven't tried it, and if he said it works, it should work.

youtube uses .swf. also convering .flv can be problematic alot of the time because of the audio codec.

total video converter leaves a really annoying watermark

the best program ive found so far for it is free & called SUPER
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=SUPER_1

but even it has problems w/ some files. the solution is some work, but it can be done.

gotta play the file then grab the audio w/ something like Audacity
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Audacity

then merge it w/ the converted vid w/ something like VirtualDub
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Virtualdub

an easier way is to just watch it w/ a flash player like FLV Player

youtube makes it pretty easy to grab their vids.

for ex on this vid

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xql-zVWtuG0

what you want to do is delete watch?
then replace the = with another /

so it would be
http://www.youtube.com/v/Xql-zVWtuG0

hit enter to load the video

then just go to your browser's menu at the top; choose File then Save.

you will have to rename it because they're all named P.swf

that's it.

Man you guys are making things complicated.

Here's what I do:

-Have the lastest version of firefox
-Download the unplug extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2254/
-Get Super (its a converter), AlSi up there has the link to it
-Use super to converter the .flv file to anything you want and play!

BTW, if you preffer to play the .flv file by itself then get this: VLC player
It will play your downloaded youtube video on the fly, but the program is a little buggy, but it gets the job done.
