Honda Accord, other Japanese cars dominate U.S. list of best cars

(Kyodo) _ The Honda Accord Hybrid was named Consumer Reports' top pick for family sedans this year, along with other Japanese cars in eight of nine other categories, Consumers Union announced Monday.

Consumer Reports said the Honda Accord dethroned the Volkswagen Passat V6, which had been a top pick annually for the last seven years, thanks to quick acceleration and good overall fuel economy. Both cars shared top honors in the family sedan category for the last two years.

Honda's Acura TL, Honda Pilot and Honda Odyssey were the top picks in the upscale sedan, 3-Row sport utility vehicle and minivan categories, respectively.

Toyota Motor's Lexus LS430 was named the top choice in the luxury car category, as were the Lexus RX330 in the midsize SUV category and the Toyota Prius in the green car category, the report said.

The Subaru Forester was at the top of the small SUV category but the Toyota RAV4 is a good runner-up, while the top honor of the fun-to-drive category went to the Subaru Impreza WRX.STi, the report said.

The report said the Ford Focus was the only American vehicle which captured the top honor of the small sedan category -- one of the 10 categories for all-around high-performers, as tested by the report among the "The 10 vehicles on Consumer Reports' top picks list are standouts across the board for performance, versatility, reliability, safety, and interior fit and finish," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut
