AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — A base 2007 Jeep Compass, the brand's much-anticipated entry in the compact SUV segment, will start at $15,985, including a $560 destination charge; the top-of-the-line Jeep Compass Limited 4x4 will carry a starting price of $21,740, including destination, the company said.

The base price for a Jeep Compass 4x4 is $17,585, including destination; the base Compass Limited starts at $20,140, including destination. A Jeep Compass "E" package is also available starting at $18,585 for front-wheel-drive models and $20,185 for 4x4 models. The special package includes standard air conditioning, power accessories, remote keyless entry, a 115-volt power outlet, reclining rear seats, a driver's-seat height adjuster and tinted glass.

The Jeep Compass, which is available in either front-wheel or four-wheel drive, is due to hit U.S. dealerships and overseas in the third quarter of this year. The base Compass is equipped with a standard 172-horsepower 2.4-liter engine coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. Other standard items include side curtain airbags, an electronic stability program, traction control and antilock brakes.

Jeep has priced the Compass significantly below competitors such as the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. A base 2006 Escape XLS starts at $19,995, including a $615 destination charge. The 2006 CRV-V LX starts at $20,945, including a $550 destination charge, and the 2006 Tucson GL starts at $18,095, including a $600 destination charge.

i like the compass. i actually wouldn't mind driving one especially with those prices
