I dunno? tell me what you think

There was a journalist who has a bi-monthly column in germany's biggest car magazine, Auto Motor und Sport about technical innovations that are coming up. This time he mentioned that he had definite confirmation about BMW using their Formula 1 technolgy in road cars. Because of the succes of their superb V10 engine, they will now feature a roadlegal V10 in the top models of the new 5-series and 6-series (which are both heavily interlinked). Both models will undoubtedly be released in 2003 and although no pictures of neither the Five or the new supersporty M6 have been released, it is sure their fastest models, the M5 and M6, will be using this new 5,0 V10 engine, pumping out no less than 550 bhp. Not a joke! I was surprised to hear that they will be so powerful but apparantly BMW will be pitching the M6 against Mercedes SLR and Porsche Carrera, at least as far as power goes. This is in line with much talk of there being no direct competitor by BMW against the SLR, Carrera GT and Ferrari F60. I can't wait for the 6-series.

here's the direct quote:

under "model news":

"The existing 540i V8 should be little changed, but the current 2.8-liter six will reportedly grow to 3.0 liters and about 220 horsepower, while the next M5 will be hiked to 450 hp"
Holy moly batman  i'd love to have one of those...not for the $1000 a month for 7 years though

500-600 hp with 15,000 RPM in street spec.
10 (streetlegal) RPM is retarted, forget 15,000... California auto-law makers are gonna have a hell of a time with this one

Hey man it's already detuned from the 18,000 RPM redline.
18k redline? thats sooo sick! how do they tune a car like that?

BMW and "detuned" together is an oxymoron.

btw, wanna talk 18,000rpm's... try 2002 Ferrari's F2002. I cant wait for this summer, I just wanna hear that 3.0L V10 "SCREEEEEAM"

See less See more
btw, for anyone interested. Unofficial 0-60 is 2.15seconds and fyi, I believe the fastest 0-100 reached was so far by an f1 car that did 1.7 secs. This was done when the gears were set to the Monte Carlo Circuit, the reason for this is the track needs the fastest 0-100 to win, at least I think so
thats sick
but the question is, will they limit it to a 155mph top speed?
I doubt seriouslt that will ever see production. 15000 rpm would require a pneumatic valvetrain, and that would be ridiculously expensive, as if the current M5 does'nt cost enough.
and also, an engine with a redline at 15000rpm would require a lot of maintenance... valve adjustment every 10000km anyone?

Why should they? The S2000's 9000rpm didn't seem to be of any problem? And it was considered LEV too, better than cars made in the 90's and 80's. Scoring LEV status is not easy.
15,000 is a far cry from 9000 chief. Take an S2000 and spin it to 15,000 see how much it likes it.
15k redline?!?!?!?!?!?!?

too bad we'll never see it :(
maybe they'll bring it out as some sort of show car... and only expect to sell a few units a year
thats freaking cool how it has the Gran Turismo thing on it and it looks just like the one in the game :D

Hey 11,000 is close enough, but that doesn't mean its impossible to reach 15,000rpm.

And that BMW is a de-tuned race engine, that just means that it wouldn't have a problem revving to 15,000rpm since its already capable of that.
