Massa fastest at Jerez as Sato crashes

2/8/05

Felipe Massa set the surprise pace during testing at Jerez on Tuesday, finishing ahead of the two Toyotas of Jarno Trulli and Ricardo Zonta. Juan Pablo Montoya stole the headlines for a moment as he tested a radical wing on his engine cover but the day was marred by a dramatic crash for Takuma Sato when his rear wing failed.

The day in Jerez started at a wet track because of the rain that came down the night before. But around the end of the day the track was fully dried and track temperatures went up to 20 degrees. Sato crashed when his rear wing failed on the high-speed approach to turn one of the circuit. His BAR 007 went into a spin and slammed into the barriers. He did not suffer any injury. It was a clear and sunny day, but the track was damp early in the morning from overnight rain.

The new wing on Montoya's car
Meanwhile Montoya completed 38 laps while de la Rosa added 77 as McLaren finished third and fourth fastest. Just behind de la Rosa was the lead Renault of Fernando Alonso - the Spaniard very busy today putting in 124 laps.

Nick Heidfeld was sixth fastest, just a couple of tenths quicker than BMW WilliamsF1 team mate (and 1st driver) Mark Webber. Between them the pair completed 180 laps and finished ahead of the two Ferraris of Rubens Barrichello and Luca Badoer. Driving an F2004M and an F2004 respectively the paur managed only 98 laps between them but finished ahead of the Red Bull RB1 of David Coulthard and the second Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella.

BAR Honda was also in action today with Anthony Davidson leading Takuma Sato and Nelson Piquet Jr on the final time sheets. The finished fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth respectively. Piquet crashed the BAR 006 once at Jerez when he hit the barriers sideways. Piquet was unharmed and damage to the car was fixable.

Testing continues tomorrow

Big smash for Sato

Sato marks the track
BAR driver Takuma Sato emerged from a huge smash at the Jerez (Spain) track on Tuesday. The Japanese's rear wing failed at top speed prior to braking for Turn 1. "I was doing over 300km/h," the basically unhurt Sato told Autosport. "It's the first time I ever lost a rear wing."

Sato, 27, complained of a sore knee and had it checked in the circuit medical centre. He later returned to the hotel and, according to a source, will not test Wednesday.

The son of former champion Nelson Piquet, meanwhile, ran in an older BAR, and - despite a late spin - lapped near team cohorts' pace.
