TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will get a sales lift by supplying minicars to Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.
Mitsubishi will sell 36,000 Japan-market eK Wagon and eK Sport minicars a year to Nissan from April 1.
The guaranteed sales are a boon to Mitsubishi. Its minivehicle sales in Japan last year fell by 55,117, or 24.2 percent, to 172,891. That was part of a broader 30.5-percent drop in Mitsubishi's total Japan sales, to 255,239.
Mitsubishi already sells 20,000 Minicab mini trucks a year to Nissan. Those are badged and sold as the Nissan Clipper. Nissan also buys about 45,000 minicars a year from Suzuki Motor Corp. Those are badged and sold as the Nissan Moco.
Minivehicles with 660cc engines make up about 30 percent of the Japanese market. Nissan does not make minivehicles.
