Yes. Universal mufflers make noise, that's it. They sound like crap cause the piping isn't optimized for it and it may be likely the choice of which resonator to use wasn't the greatest choice. Most of them sound buzzy and they are extremely loud. The cat-back gets you properly sized pipes, a tuned, controlled sound, and most important...some HP. Maybe only lik 2-3, but the driveability of the car is improved, and hey, it's just more fun. It may be more expensive, but it's worth it if you are really serious about an exhuast.

Often times buying a muffler and custom piping is better because you can specify the diameter of piping most appropriate for your current setup rather than just buying a mass produced cat-back system setup to fit the average buyer.

The generic 60 mm piping is good up to about 200 whp. If you are pushing more than that then a custom setup would be more appropriate.

ive heard that the Mugen Twinloop axelback/silencer will give you hp gain w/out the b-pipe. Ive heard through the grapevine =). doesn't really make sense to me but it was supposively in a magazine.
for the civic si, mugen only makes the rear section, and it makes power. perhaps a "universal" muffler won't do much, but the muffler, not the b-pipe, is the major bottleneck in a honda exhaust.

i bought the axle-back exhaust from comptech. they will even tell you themselves that the b-pipe provides little to no improvement on an otherwise stock car. until you add a turbo, supercharger, or do significant engine work, you won't me moving enough air to need bigger piping.

take a look at comptech's dyno for their exhaust:

60mm is a bit big for most mildly tuned motors upto and including 1.8Ls. Id go with 2".

I would say more like 2.25. 2.25 will be good up to about 210 hp. That is what the average tuner would need.
