Nissan opens new U.S. design studio in Michigan

(Kyodo) _ Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. on Thursday opened its new U.S. design studio in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to strengthen its design capacity for the North American market.
Nissan also unveiled a new concept car born out of Nissan Design America-Farmington Hills created on the grounds of Nissan Technical Center North America Inc. to promote the combination of product development and design work.

The concept car is a small, sporty hatchback designed for young people.

NDA-Farmington Hills will be responsible for designing pickup trucks and other models in strong demand in the North America market, according to Nissan. Among its features is an 8-foot by 20-foot screen that allows designers in different studios to simultaneously analyze and manipulate large-scale computer-generated designs.

Shiro Nakamura, Nissan's senior vice president in charge of design, said the new design studio will arouse "potential demand" by designing vehicles "unbound by conventional concepts about the North American market."
