Have you taken a lookk behind your gauge cluster to see if all the wires are plugged in? I know this sounds dumb, but check the easiest stuff first...
Do the other gauges work properly, gas temp, RPM's?
yeah cause wires just fallout all the time :nuts and I wouldn't exactly call it easier to get to compared to taking out the vss and replacing it. especially since thats the problem

oh and vtec works fine without a speedometer, it won't work without the rpm.

your vss isn't making the proper connection

Clean em with choke cleaner and see if the plug and the progs in the vss are cleaned well , see if that works

if it doesn't its not making good contact anymore, take some speaker wire and open it up, put some of the wire in each of the holes and plug it in again, should fix it

vss's dont go bad, just the connections do. its probably old and needs to be cleaned off really well.
not always true. I have seen them go bad. and it wasn't the connectors. but I would say 75% of the time it is the connection and a good cleaning normally fixes it
