Ok just got done with a slight revision to my system. It's not the most ass kicking thing around, but it works well. The only things that aren't new are the motherboard, memory and drives(HD, DVD, and floppy). It used to be a p4 2.4C OC'd to 2.92G in a no name case with no name PS and Radeon 9800XT. I upgraded the processor to a 3.2, then all hell broke loose and now it's a beast.

Just the waterblocks, no hose plumbing yet

Hoses and rad in

The bits:
Antec P180 case(the only case sanctioned by SPCR http://www.silentpcreview.com/article249-page1.html)
AcoustiPak Deluxe sound dampening kit
Antec Neo HE550 Power supply(with silverstone 80mm fan)
4 Silverstone FN121 1200rpm fans in case (usually running at 7v)
2 Silverstone FM121 2400rpm fans on rad (usually running at 5v)
Silicon fan mounts for all fans.
Asus P4C800E-Dlx(about 3 years old) @1ghz fsb
P4 3.2E E0 stepping @ 4.0ghz
Kingston hypermax DDR4000 @ 1000ghz(2x500) 2.5-3-3-7
MSI 6800GT stock 350/1ghz now 460/1.20ghz
ATI TV wonder elite
Swifttech Apex Ultra+ ( http://www.swiftnets.com/products/H20-220-APEX-plus.asp )
All three water blocks lapped with 2000 grit wet sanding.
Arctic Silver 5
Cool Sleeves for 3/4" OD hose(keeps hoses from kinking)
FluidXP extreme non conductive coolant( http://www.fluidxp.com/ )
2 x 74GBRaptor striped
1 x 400GB regular WD SATA
Fan controller
Cheapy 16x DVD burner
Creative Live External USB sound card feeding old cambridge 5.1 setup
Mickeysoft Windows MCE
Viewsonic VX924 it also goes to my 42" LCD that is right next to it.
Comfort keyboard system
Logitech MX1000 Laser on Func 1030 pad

The best things are that it is SILENT and it runs very cool. When I game I turn the fans up a hair and they are still very quiet. The pump always stays full speed and is inaudible. With the fans on the low setting you can barely hear the computer.....if you put your head 1 foot away from it :p With the fans on high in an absolutely quiet room you can hear it from about 10 feet away, with the TV on normal volume you can't hear it at all. With 27°C ambient and the stock P4 HSF the processor was 48°C idle 60ish loaded, vid was 55°C idle and 70°C load(damn prescott and hot ass vid card) Right now ambient is 26°C processor is 28°C, vid is 32°C, with some hardcore gaming it gets a little warm, the hottest I've seen it was 38°C for the processor and 45°C for the vid, that was after about 8 hours solid of playing City of Villains at 1280x1024 with All Vid settings on Max.

Oh and a side note, 81,903 aquamark3, not bad for an old AGP motherboard.

Nice monitors! I had a 2005fpw, but the wife whined and cried about her dinky little 17" LCD, and I wanted one that was a little faster(I had some strange artifacts with real high paced games with the 2005), so my kid got hers, she got the dell, and I got a new one, but I really want one of the newer big widescreen dells.

Man your desk is clean!!! I'm embarrased to take a picture of my desk, it's horrid. Maybe when i'm done cleaning up from the upgrade, I have stuff everywhere. Hell I had to crop those pics to hide the floor clutter as well, tools, hose, screws, all over the place.

I was just thinking and had to dig through some old pics. Did that case have another drive rack? I think antec just took a base chassis, added a different face plate, and different guts, and called it new.

This was 3 revisions ago for the same motherboard. Yes I spray painted my case, and yes I'm a tard(I also used a sawsall to cut the hole in the top for the top fan, nothing like brute force, I scratched it so bad I had to paint it).

i'll have pics up in a few days... but here's my rig:

AMD Athlon64 3800+
2x 512mb CorsairXMS RAM
ASUS AV8-SLI (I think?...) Motherboard
2x eVGA GeForce 7900GTX 512MB (Kinda long cards, but they work)
Sound Blaster Audigy2
16x Dual Layer 16x DVD+RW (Generic)
ASUS 52x32x52x CD-RW
550W PSU
72GB SATA Hard drive
2x 250GB SATA Hard drive
200GB UATA Hard drive
300GB UATA Hard drive
500GB UATA Hard drive (it's my friend's but his computer broke so i'm holding on to it for him)
ThermalRock "Circle" Aluminum/Steel tower case (it's freagin huge... and it's on top of my desk)
3 case fans, 1 i guess "aftermarket" headsink/fan for my CPU, in the process of cutting a hole in the side of my case so i can get some damn air flow to my hard drives
and for some reason a 3.5" floppy drive
and a broken cathode light.

it runs well... i can get a good 30-40 fps on full settings at 1280x1024 resolution on half-life 2 or cs:source. oddly enough i play starcraft more.

whats your 3dmark05 score? ^^

I don't really like 3dmark for an overall mark. They are purely graphics power. Aquamark3 is a much better overall system gauge. One of my friends runs a 7800gtx extreme in A64 x2 3800 and in most games I get about the same framerates as he does, but in 3dmark 03, 05 and 06 he crushes me.

With my [email protected] and the 6800gt at 420/1100 I got 5755, with the [email protected] I got a 6136 on forceware 84.20 which are known for being a bit bad on benchmarks, but better looking in games.(I can get 300-500 more using 77.xx) even though my aquamark jumped about 25,000. I just changed waterblocks on the vid card today(went from the MCW60 to a dangerden NV68 since it water cools the ram also). I'm running the 6800GT at 440/1180 and stock volts for a few days till the AS5 cures.

This are with all of my normal processes, didn't bother to close anything.
06 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=226041
05 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1930696
03 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=4718938

I'm pretty happy though. I got the 6800GT by trading a 9800pro with zalman heatpipe setup(he was building a HTPC and wanted quiet) and installing a deck in his car. I paid $150 for the 3.2, the only expensive parts were the water cooling setup and the monitor. With so much money going into the wagon I'm a cheap biatch everywhere else :p

lol... i just wanted to know what audioxbliss scores were...

cause it seemed kinda funny to me that he was only getting 30-40fps in those games with 2 7900gtx 512... youd think youd get more... cause with my 6800gt in bf2 i get an average of 50fps on medium settings...

Just realized that. That is odd. I average about 90fps at 1280x1024 with everything on max and 4x AA/8x Ani in HL2 Lost Coast(ran HOC 1.6), a pair of 7900gtxs should at least be maxed(~110-115fps) at that res especially at around $550 ea.. Hmm digging around on toms now it looks really odd http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/03/09/ati_and_nvidias_same_day_mega_launch_mayhem/page13.html and even scarrier that for over $1000 you get 5% increase across most games, and some of them the single outperforms the SLI, YIKES!

He should be pushing a 13,000 3dmark05 with those beasts. I'd like to see that project. If I had a pair of 7900GTXs I'd have to move my computer in the living room so I could play at 1080p(1920x1080)!

and his system shouldnt be limiting the performance too much... i either think hes bs'ing us or theres something wrong with his setup...

wish i had my new build finished... it should be done by mid summer, i hope... then i can do the same and game at 1080p! w00t

budget rig:

xion solaris case, xion PS
athlon 64 3200+ venice
1GB corsair pc3200 ram
biostar t-force 6100 mobo with onboard lan/video/audio
seagate barracude 7200rpm 8MB cache SATA hdd
asus d/l 16x dvd burner
winxp pro
panda a/v
hauppage pvr card coming after we move into our house.
logitech wireless bluetooth keyboard/laser mouse/numpad

shitake 19" crt monitor i got for $15

all components came in at under $500 shipped [excluding monitor and keyboard/mouse which i just bought just recently].

I don't really do much gaming, just needed a box that would run school applications like dreamweaver, oracle 9i, fireworks, j builder, vs.net and the like. my old dell i got with this monitor awhile back wasn't cutting it with the massive 128mb of ram (not enough to compile a java app in a reasonable amount of time) and 800 mhz p3.

and i wanted something i could toss into a media center box one day, hence the mATX mobo with builtin functions (such as spdif and video out ;) )

nice setup. Oh to answer your question, this wasn't very planned out. I got the 6800GT and realized the system was lacking. Went two weeks with the 2.4C and the 6800GT then a local computer shop had a killer deal on an OEM 3.2. I poked around looking which stepping would OC the best, and found E0 and D0 were close with the E0 being slightly better, and steer clear of C0. I went down to the store and looked up the id and sure enough it was an E0. I went back home and put the zalman 7000 on and had to crank the fan way up to keep the temps reasonable, but they still got scary under load(going from northwood to presscHOT is a HUGE heat difference). I start looking at HSFs and found the swiftech setup on one of the deal sites(slickdeals, bensbargains, or techbargains can't remember which) then did some researching and the only one that looked better was a danger den setup, but was 2x the price so I ordered the swiftech. The swiftech box came and I was looking at my old antec case and thought, "if I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right", so I went down and got the P180 and a crapload of fans.

With this performance increase I am addicted again. I looked at a A8N32, an x2 4800+ and a 7900GTX. I also thought about using the CT-479 adapter for my board and adding a dothan(one of my friend has an OC'd dothan 755 on my same mobo, and a 7800GS, and that thing stomps ass). Then I noticed intel finally pulled it's head out of it's ass and decided to make a desktop merom and call it conroe and decided I can wait a little while. Yonah is dual core Dothan, Merom is 64bit yonah, and Conroe is a desktop Meron with more clocks.

The only whines I have through this project are prescotts don't seem to go much over 4g, OMFG prescotts run hot, OMFG 6800GTs run hot, Swiftech uses 7/16" hose on 1/2" barbs which is a BIOTCH to get the hose on(good news was no leaks at all), and silverstone fans are CRAP. My FM121s have both gotten a noise in the last day or so. It sounds like a dragging sleeve, but they are dual BB fans, so it's down to crappy bearings. $15 each and they SUCK. I used the antec fans that came with the case for the rad and put them on the fan controller and so far they are great. The 4 low speed Silverstone sleeve bearing fans are still as quiet as can be. Go figure, sleeve good, bearing bad?

With a 165 you prolly wont get much over 2.8, I had one of the best steppings and that was it. With a 9 multiplier you have to get 310 HTT just to get close to 2.8 and most motherboards dont go that high. Plus the new steppings/weeks dont clock very well.

My system:
Opteron 170 0550 UPMW (Best one you can even imagine buying)
overclocked to 3.1ghz (310x10) w/ 1.51vcore on watercooling
Asus A8N32-SLI motherboard
2 x 1gig Mushkin PC400
Evga 7800GTX @ 530/1350 (Waiting to step up to 7900gtx when
evga gets them back in stock)
Watercooled w/ Apogee CPU block, Maze4 GPU block, BIX 2x120
radiator w/ 2 38mm wide 80CFM fans on itf
2 x 36gig Raptors in Raid0
21" Widescreen LCD @ 1680x1050.

I played FEAR all the way through at 1680x1050 on max res no problem. And I scored over 35k in 3DM2k1. Havent ran others yet.

nice setups guys... i wish i didn't have to go budget, but that's what students do i guess... and i sure as hell wasn't going to rock a dell :bomb

i just don't like off the shelf pc's in any regard

and fear is a pretty demanding game i must say, i can get through at 800x600 w/little lag (yes, with the onboard video). but when i cranked it up to 1024 all hell broke loose...

guess that's why i didn't build it to game.
