Prepping my car for paint

what exact black do you want?
by the way, im considering do the paintwork on my honda, what's the total cost generally?

If you have a nice HVLP gravity feed gun and a decent compressor, youll need the primer, bascoat (color you want obviously), reducer, clear coat and clear coat hardener, and a &*It load of sandpaper, i used 80-250 grit, and it worked good. You dont have to get all the paint off, just roughenit up and smooth it out. Electric sanders are great.




Spend around 100 or less as opposed to thousands. Save money and Youtube and Google The hell out of the subject. ( painting, prepping, etc..)

I've heard of primer, basecoat, and clear, but reducer and clear coat hardener? I'm guessing reducer has something to do with smoothing out the paint before applying the clear coat and I've never heard of clear coat hardener.. does that speed up the clear coat hardening process?


btw, you got all your equipment and paint for under $100??

Know im just talking about the paint supplies. A spray gun isnt that much tho, and you can get a compressor for a couple hundred.


Reducer is pretty much paint thinner. You cant just put straight paint in the gun , its too thick it wont go through the gun at all.

and yes clearcoat hardner is exactly what it sounds like.

yea, black is good, but i want something new i want to be different. so im looking for some nice colors, any good recommendations?

Oh I was thinking it was a whole nother step in the painting process. About how many layers of each do you usually apply?

I've only painted small parts with rattle cans..

no fast and furious shit like orange, please.

most of the nicer colors I can think of are pearlescent so i'm not much of a help.

i usually do 2 coats primer, 2 or three base, and always 1 clear

That would be cool if u can get some pics up of your work, im getting ready to start sanding my 91 hatch down, would love to get some pointers from you.

I know man, It sucks doing a project WITH NO CAMERA. lammmmmmmmmmmme. But If you guys want pointers just ask.....no such thing as dumb questions...........

You can always redo it. BUT SANDING SUCKS

Ya sanding is a pain. A few years ago I bight my mom one of the black and decker cyclone sander things (she's into wood work) and I used that when painting my trunk lid of my old avenger. It came out smooth, but what I didn't like was it wound up having no gloss look at all. Not sure if it was because of the clear, or because I needed to wet sand afterwards or something. Either way that's what's keeping from doing my civic. I may start with something small like jus the bumper to see how it turns out. Both my bumpers could Use it anyays, they have a lil road rash after 10 yrs.
