problem with this forum

i have noticed from time to time that a topic being raised here has been very well discussed on another forum. in the interest of providing the poster with as much information as possible regarding his or her question, i have posted links to those posts along with whatever advice i may have of my own.

however, it appears this forum is set to convert addresses such as honda - tech and honda - acura into strings of ***********.

i don't understand this. i don't think it is a secret these other forums exist. and if someone who frequents many forums is able to provide a good deal of information to another by linking to a specific thread, i think that should be encouraged. isn't the whole point of these forums to provide as many viewpoints/opinions/suggestions as possible?

i posted about this to the suggestion forum yesterday, but that post has apparently been deleted.

does anyone agree with me?

I agree completely. There is no good reason to hide the links to other sites with *****. I think it is ridiculous. If there is good info on another messge board then I feel that it would be beneficial to everyone if that info was shared amongst all of us. We are all here to learn about our cars right? So why block something from another site if it will help everyone learn more.
Just testing:

BTW, I agree with you. Good info is good info, regardless of what board it comes from.
yes but you guys need to think about it like mcdonalds saying the burgers are bigger at burger king... its just not done... people dont advertise for their competitors an any way... the only exception is to say how they are better than the other...
SoFlaGS-T has a good point. I think they just want to keep the trash talking and flaming to a minimum.

but this isn't really a business, it's more of a community. they don't charge for membership, and i haven't seen any advertising here. so having people look at other forums doesn't have the same effect as mcdonald's customers being told they can go to burger king for a bigger burger.

and i am not trying to imply that the other forums are better. just in certain circumstances, when a topic has been well discussed on another forum, directing someone to that information is in the spirit of this whole honda/acura community all the forums help create.

Yeah but just because Burger King has a lot of good burgers doesn't mean that McDonalds should just shut down and all the customers should go to Burger King.
I'm pretty sure I'm reinforcing Philbert's point here... when Superhonda went down (for months), I went across the street to Honda-Acura. I'm sure I wasn't the only one, as I recognized quite a few names. On a whim I clicked my superhonda link, and WHOA!!!! it's back up and running!! Philbert's right, don't look at this like us vs. them (McDonalds vs. Burger King, or Ford vs. Chevy), it would be pretty stupid to start a civil war of Honda vs. Honda. I'll be cruising both in search of info, but links always help.

Also, has anyone tried posting a link to superhonda from 'the other site'? Wonder if it shows up over there?

Might want to move this to O/T.
i had originally posted this in the Help Suggestion Center, but it seemed to get deleted, so i just put it in the forum that covers my car.

i really wanted one of the moderators or staff to either change the system to allow the links, or at least provide some reasonable explanation for why they don't allow those references.

The only person that is able to change that is probably Mike himself. The mods are only here to make sure threads are where they're suppose to be, and that the post do not offend anyone. Also, I'm not really bothered by the links being crossed out, its not like I'm losing sleep over it. If you want just space out the letters and it'll show up. Also they just don't allow advertisment of other sites, because they just want to keep peace. Imagine if one person said that oh yeah well this person at this site said that it was this length and you said it wrong. I think this other site is better so I'll go with this guy instead. Just think it over people, the last thing we need is to have fights to see which site is better and has more answers. This is a Honda/Acura helping site, not bash other H/A sites.

i guess i didn't really think of the negative consequences of allowing the links. but i still hold the belief that more information beats less every time.

peace,

The last time I tried, superhonda links did work for the other sites. There are a few links that for some reason works here too. But I don't knwo why.
take your beef up with Mike SHO...it's his policy...or the server's program....

I totally agree with you...it's juvenille and I've tried to convince Mike to stop this censoring of other sites. It's not like people are going to stay only at SHO just because you cannot link to them. I get around it by placing a space in the address link and telling people to copy , paste to browser address window, and remove the space...it's lame but gets around the problem....like I said, I've already tried over the years...Mike can be pretty stubborn about some policies though and this one appears to be a keeper.
