Putting an H23 in a civic hatchback....

i have a 4th gen prelude Si, and the engine is immacculate, but the actual car is starting to die.. its an accumulation of accidents and just other stuff.. but what i want to do is buy a civic hatchback and just transfer everything from the prelude to the new car.. can anyone tell me how hard or easy this is? is this recomended? will it fit? what do i need? what kind of times should i expect? and will a manual civic tranny bolt up to the H23 ? i want a 92 + civic hatch.thanks..

u can do it but steering it wont be fun. your turning radius would be like tryign to get a semi truck to do dounuts
search for h22 swaps, they're basically the same swap as the h23 without the vtec. and no, the civ tranny isn't gonna bolt up to the h23.

the reason i want you to search is because i know people are gonna bitch about this topic being posted again and again. and the problem with that is that because it's been posted so much, everyone has their own opinions on this swap. so instead of having to hear all our opinions again, read the posts that we've all already made and formulate your own opinion. and if you have any new q's, ask away.
also, try to ignore anyone doesn't actually have a civic with an H22/H23 (or heck, even an F22) swap (or at least personally knows someone who does), cause this swap actually isn't all that popular, and so people who actually know their facts about it are far and few between. most people will probably try to say something about how the steering sucks, and the torque transfer is too much for the drivetrain, but almost none of those people can actually speak from experience; it's mainly people repeating what they've heard from other people, most of whom are doing the same thing.

i say go for it, i've heard enough stories from people who have done the swap and have no regrets to safely say that it's definitely something to look into. just make sure you're really sure about it before you do it.

i've also heard that you can't run A/C with the swap, is this true?
the h23 will work...no problems with steering or with the extra weight. I have some friends that autocross with an h22 civic and they love it.

They make brackets that can fit an AC in, but no one makes one For power steering ...you might be able to custom fabricate something, but it'd be pretty close.
all ive every heard were problemsabtou hseries motors in civics they woudl be great for straight line racing
yes this is maybe a ok swap do ur research. but i would say if the lude is shit and u prob won't get alot of $$ of it sell the engine save some money and buy b18 for the civic u may have less problems than lude engine. if u have not try a car with a b18 engine then ur missing out its alot more fun than ludes. even better if u make a sleeper. what ever u do have fun doing it.
The nice thing about the h23 motor is that the 1st gen Eclipse turbo manifold bolts right up to it, and those are really easy to find, so you could put a nice turbo kit together for $500 easily. I don't think A/C would fit without some custom modification.
wow, really, the 1gen eclipse turbo fits? hmmm...
Yeah it should bolt right up except the two end holes I believe you have to drill out a little bit more but that shouldn't take more than a few minutes.
Just a note. If the First Gen exhaust manifold will fit, the Second Gen manifold will also fit. On top of that, if the Second Gen manifold will fit, than the Lancer EVO manifold will also fit.. The head design was the same for all years, up until the 3G of couse. Only difference is that the 1G head walks all over the 2G head flow wise.

The 1G manifold is not a good choice, it flows like ass. You can find one for like $25 on PartsTrader though.

The 2G manifold isn't all bad, flows pretty good. 1G guys swap in the 2G manifold all of the time. Made for T25 turbo, 6cm2 turbine housing opening. Can be found for around $100 used.

The Lancer EVO manifold has substantially higher flow than even the 2G manifold. This manifold was designed for the Big 16G turbo that came stock on the LanEvo, 7cm2 turbine housing opening. Biggest differnce between 2G mani and this one is found in the collector area, but the mani as a whole is larger in size. Expect to pay about $225 brand new.

Any of the above manifolds will allow you to use T25, T28, 16G, Big 16G, 18G, 20G, Frank Series, Red & Green Series, etc.. Custom fabrication of oil and water supply/return lines and Downpipe would still need to be addressed. I personally can't confirm if the manifold will bolt up to any Honda 'H' series motor. But if it does, more power to you.

Matt J.

IF you swap in a h23 then your gonna be so pissed that your gonna want to drop the bitch off the grand canyon! If you swap a h23 into a hatch and then drop a b16 into that same hatch youll run about the same. Plus your gonna have to buy expensive mounts to keep your ac. If your gangsta youll do a h23/h22 vtec frankenstein but i doubt your that gangsta if your asking this question (no offense). IF anyone thinks that im wrong go to darkso.com and go to the swap guide list and see for yourself. it will provide track times down to the mph i believe. PEace
by the way yall need to change that noob shit. I know as much as a lot of the damn techs on this biotch

Well if you are as smart as you claim you are, then you would've realized that the "noob" would dissappear after just a few more posts.
