hey i wanted to get a radar detector for about 100 bucks. what the best one for that much? thanks

I had a $250 dector that bellied up on me and just bought a cool looking $100 cobra and have been more than happy with it. I can't justify paying a lot of money for a radar detector anymore. Only way I'd spend a lot of money is if it were one of the three piece units or a valantine. But that's not going to be anytime soon.

If you just want to locate the cops, I read on one guys website that he has a really cool police scanner in his car. It will sound a little alarm if there is a radio transmission within a half mile or so. And since all the cop cars have radio repeaters, he'll have a good idea when cops are near. I'd have to find the website again, but I think that it would be worth the extra money to have that. It's a never fail as long as there is a decent amount of radio traffic.

the best one (in my opinion) is the Phantom radar detector.. it is $350 ... it is supposed to make you invisible to the radar guns .. and if you ever get a speeding ticket .. they will pay for it.

joe: they proved that the phantom was a scam, it's just a black box with some non functioning electronics on the inside.

A radar detector is like a condom, the better one you get, the chances of it working is greater. The best is the Valentine one that's nearly half a grand, and next is the escort 8500 which is about $300. Anything under that is just a waste of money, those $100 radars are just for looks and coolness, the performance on those things are horrible. Trust me, it's well worth the money.
( By the way, i have a V1, escort 8500, and a cobra ) Go V1 all the way, it's saved me countless times

i read something about that too ... but i heard that all those reviews were right ... its not that the phantom doesnt work ... it only works if the cop aims his radar at your grill ... if they aim it anywhere else the phantom cannot scramble the radar.

why buy a detector when u can get jammer...... or what im getting a transmitter, it tell the cop how fast your going and u can set it to defferent speeds

i know the transmitter works my electronics teacher has 1 and i am building the same 1.... id does not work on laser though but i live in canada the cops ware i live dont have that stuff.......

The First Mod I did to my car was a Valentine One Radar.
I was crusin with my friend one Saturday in the South Florida area, and we must have passed 15 traps. The Valentine one picked up 14 of the 15, and the one it missed was an instant on one. If cops do instant on, then you are screwed no matter what.

After seeing that, I bought one right away, and the $400 it cost must have saved me over $1500 in tickets. Id recommend this product to anyone.... I can go on with stories about the radar, but I dont feel like typing that much.
