where can i buy a good radar detector? 1 that isnt too cheap and 1 that isnt super expensive?? what are some famous company detectors most of u guys use?

the ONLY radar detector out there u can find at www.valentineone.com
it might be super expensive but everything else is just throwing ur money down the toilet n flushing it....
i've had 4 different radar dectors n they all worked like crap... didnt detect a cop until he was hitting me with radar n such... n they were supposed ta be good radar dectors... one was a bel one was a cobra n then one was just a generic gift from someone....
but once i saved up n got a valentine... i've been speeding ticket free for 2yrs now....

Cobra, and bells are decent. You have to understand, no radar detector will warn against you gettng zapped by a cop. If the cop is hiding, and has his radar off, and then turns it on, I don't care what you have, your busted.
When you pick one out, be sure it detects all the different radar types, and e sure it detects laser. Other then that really they all work the same.
Also don't think that just because you have one, that your not going to get caught...

Valentine One's have the absolute best filtering there is. However, they are pretty much about double the cost of a Bel or Cobra.
Bel-Tronics are a big supplier for Radar products to the cops and for that reason I bought one their products. I would have got a V-1 but it was way out of my price range.
Instant-On is a killer, no matter which kind you have. If you are cruising at Warp 9, they can power up and clock you within seconds. Although you have about a 2 to 3 second warning you will never be able to slow down enough.
I own a Bel 870 and it works pretty good. Very fast reaction time.

Even other radar detectors can set off the lower end models, like a Bel or a Cobra.
BTW, if you buy one, make sure when you use it you keep it up as high on your windshield as possible. It will give you the best response time, espeically for that Smokey that is sitting behind the hill you are going over.

Go check out your local stereo shops, they usually carry the full array of Bel and Cobra. I doubt they sell Valentine One as they are expensive to stock.
Word ... I've had my V1 for a little over a year now and I'm ticket free (knock on woodshiatbo said:
). I had a Whistler before the V1 and it was ok, but the V1's range is MUCH better, And the arrows that tell you where the radar is coming from are invaluable. Once you have them, you won't be able to go back. It's no replacement for paying attention, but it helps to have an electronic friend doing some of the work for you. And sure, it $400, but you'll spend $200 or more on a much less effective detector, so IMO why not just save up for the V1. If you're still not convinced, check the Car and Driver detector test from a few months back - V1 blew them all away, including Escort. Just my 2 cents. It's your $ so do what makes you happy.

I have a Bell one right now. It kindda a piece. It picks up automatic doors. my cell phone ringing, even other radar detectors. but it also picks up cops and has saved me a ton of money. I do alot of highway driving, every 2 weeks i drive to see my girlfriend and she's in school about 450 kms away. I thinks its time to invest in a new one.

Whistlers are crap. I've had one.
My Bel is pretty good. Now not as great as the Valetine One, but you also have to remember to drive smart.
People think radar detectors are the end all to tickets. It will not help if you drive like an idiot and don't pay attention to where cops hide out. Common sense if you pass an overpass there might be a cop hiding behind the pillar.

I value your opinion as a consumer....but IMO I have allways had a Whistler and have not had any problems "ever"......CivicSiRacer said:
I decied to try out a Radio Shack brand ( made by Whistler) and also love it.....BTW if you check them out since as of the begining of next year Radio Shack will not be able to sell them.....my unit went from $150 to $69.....2 year warranty from manufacturer........

I speed occasionally but other then dat i go the speed limit. I saw a special on tv that put radar detectors to the test and having one is pointless no matter wat brand it is, i was about to go buy it but after seeing dat i realize one thing,..if they goin to get u, their goin to get u. DAmn radar got da car before the damn dectector went off.

My idea of using a detector is not so that I can go around driving double the posted limit. It's more to give me a warning when the cops are around. I don't speed by very much usually but it's nice to know when the Po Po's are around. If you rely 100% on them and think you are invincible you will end up with a glove box full of tickets before too long.
I've found that cops around these parts leave their guns powered up alot. I think less and less people are buying detectors because most of them owned one at one point and found out that they still got tickets because they didn't know how to use them properly. Since less people own detectors I think the cops generally drive around the freeways with their guns on and when they do I can hear them coming from a long ways away.
See, if there is quite a bit of traffic in front of you, chances are pretty good people ahead of you are getting clocked, so that is your saving grace. But if you are alone....

When I bought my detector the store I was in had a Radar gun so I could actually see how fast different detectors reacted when the gun was powered up. Some low end units took 2 or 3 seconds. The Bel 870 I bought reacted in less than a second. Those 2 to 3 seconds can help but if you are really speeding then they are gonna get ya!
My Bel was about $250 CDN. It had the exact same reaction time as the high end Bel Digital that was twice the price. I've always wanted one so I bought it. I did manage to get a speeding ticket this year but I was not using it at the time. If I was I am sure I would have been saved because it was a huge radar trap. Stupid me, but oh well, I've pissed away $100 on worse things in my life.

yeah thats so true.... if the cops wanna get u they will get u.... no radar detector or not...
the only time i c a decent need for a radar dector is if ur gunna be doin alot of highway driving...
i drive like about 300ml every w/e.... so i end up seeing my share of speed traps... n highway speed traps r easy pickins for a radar detector....
but if u dont do all that much highway driving... i wouldn't even really suggest getting one.... they just give u a false sense of security most of the time.
n if u every get pulled over n u have a radar detector u can be assured that the cop will give u a ticket.... there is no getting out of it then
