rear main seal job

After getting the tranny and flywheel/flexplate off, is replacing a rear main seal on a y8 pretty cut and dry? Pry it out and tap the new one in with a 2x4?

Also is it ill advised to start the engine with the flywheel off to make sure it is sealed well? Probably is... would idle really rough, but it's a lot of work to torque the bolts on the FW back on only to take it off if the seal is still leaking or not in far enough

there is a whole unit that has about 10 10mm bolts that holds the seal. You take that off and then take the seal out of it.

...and you cant start the motor without the flywheel on. The flywheel is used to start the motor (its what the starter engages to), and unless the crank is worn pretty bad where the seal rides, you should be fine.

Haha, oops forgot about that. I could probably start the car with my impact wrench if I really wanted to avoid putting the flywheel back on.

Do you have to take the retainer out to change the seal? Or is it significantly easier to change the seal with the retainer out?

you might be able to do it without taking the whole thing off, but it lets you drive out the seal from the back. Plus its not hard to take the whole thing off anyway.

also: dont try to start your car without a flywheel lol

I understand, see the thing is, if I'm going to take the tranny off and the flexplate, I'd like to know for 100% the thing is sealing before I bolt everything back up. I guess putting the flexplate back on and then letting it idle for 20-30 minutes and then taking it back off to check it out should be sufficient. (I keep calling it a flywheel but the car in question is my wifes ex auto so no flywheel
