Rebuild or swap??

895 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Shibby H22A
Well, I took my lude into the shop to find out why it wasn't passin emmissions. I'm buring too much oil and it seems that the piston rings are going bad. The guy said its only a matter of time before they completely fail. So my question is: to rebuild the beast and maybe add some performance parts, or scrap it and just swap a new engine. I have a h22a, so nothing less than VTEC will do. What would the costs be to rebuild vs. swap and if I did rebuild how much life would the engine have left in it??

i would completely rebuild the engine. saves more money and saves time. you will also be faster.
but how much would that cost and what kinda life would the engine have afterwards?
yeah how much does that cost and what all would be replaced/rebuilt? i need to stop my oil loss problem...
You actually could just get the H22a block which should be cheaper than a whole swap. You might be able to find a shop around that has just the block, or check www.thepartstrader.com.

Or you can just build your motor for NA or FI.
Or just get it resleeved, new pistons, new rings, but while you're in there might as well do everything.

i really wanna keep the H23 and rebuild it. a swap would be just way too much work and money. ive been burning oil at 1.25 quarts every 1000 miles. the engine always burned oil, but its started getting real bad after i switched to synthetic at 90k (im at 102k now)...i think this summer im gonna have a lot of work done (timing belt, water pump, valve adjustment, and have the engine rebuilt).

It would not cost much at all. most likely cost less than a whole swap. a friend of mine is rebuild his ls motor for 2k with all new parts. Engine will be like brand spankin new except for the block and head.
if I did rebuild it, what kinda parts should I use, brand wise and what kind of gains could I hope to see?
Just get the head cleaned up and the valves and do a valve seat re grind, and get the cyclinder honed and get a piston that is a bit over bore and new rings and you will be fine.

Might as well want to replace, water pump, oil pump, oil stump, gaskets gaskets, timing belt, and of course always replace head gasket everytime the head is removed/loosened.

But go for H22!!!!!! H22 owns!:)
